Southern Miss used a two-run home run by Marc Bourgeois in the fourth inning to pull out of an early deficit and a double play in the ninth inning helped the Golden Eagles hold on for a 6-5 victory over Louisiana in the first game of a Sunday doubleheader at Pete Taylor Park in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Greg Fontenot, Mike Petello and Jordan Bourque all singled in succession with one out in the ninth inning off of USM closer Collin Cargill to load the bases and get the tying run 90 feet from home plate.
Cargill induced a ground ball to second base off the bat of Chris Sinclair and the Golden Eagles (8-2) turned a 4-6-3 double play to end the game and snap the Cajuns (6-4) four-game winning streak.
The two teams will take a 30 minute break and play game two of the doubleheader at approximately 4:45 p.m. Taylor Hubbell (2-0, 0.41 ERA) will pitch for UL and Geoffrey Thomas (2-0, 0.64 ERA) will take the mound for USM.
Jordan Poirrier led the Cajuns and all players with four RBI. Bourgeois led the Golden Eagles with two RBI.
Todd McInnis held on to collect the victory for Southern Miss. He allowed five runs over seven innings. Joey Satriano was charged with the loss for the Cajuns after allowing six runs (five earned) in five innings of work.
The Cajuns posted the game's first runs in their first at bat. A one-out double by Alex Fuselier was followed by a single from Poirrier which scored Fuselier for a 1-0 lead. Poirrier later scored when he executed a double steal with Tyler Frederick.
The Golden Eagles picked one of the runs back up in the bottom half of the first inning, taking advantage of a Cajuns error and a couple of Satriano wild pitches.
Louisiana manufactured a run in the third inning following a leadoff double by Ryan Leonards. Fuselier laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Leonards to third base then Poirrier grounded to second base to plate the run upping the Cajuns lead to 3-1.
USM grabbed the lead on Bourgeois' two-run home run in the fourth inning. The homer capped off a three-run frame which gave the hosts a 4-3 lead.
A one-out walk issued by Satriano kept the inning alive for the Golden Eagles in the fifth and they took advantage by stretching their lead an additional two runs. RBI base hits from Adam Doleac (double) and Isaac Rodriguez (bloop single) followed the walk.
Poirrier answered back for the Cajuns with a two-run home run down the right field line in the sixth inning which pulled UL back within a run at 6-5.
