3/16/2011 2:36:00 PM | Men's Tennis
"This is a good win for our program," said UL head coach Mark Jeffrey. "Cleveland State has reached the NCAA tournament three years in-a-row. I'm proud of how our guys stepped up and played."
The Cajuns (2-8) started off hot, sweeping the doubles matches for the first point.
Yanick Mandl and Brandon Fairne teamed up for an 8-6 win while Ted Nilsson and Carlin Murray posted the same score in their victory. Oscar Pachon and Carl Alberton completed the sweep with an 8-5 win in the no. 3 doubles spot.
Murray kept things rolling in the no. 1 singles, grabbing a 6-4, 6-2 win over CSU's Yannick Goossens.
At no. 2 singles, Mandl downed Rob Fox in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2.
The Vikings were able secure points in the no. 3 and no. 6 spots but it was not enough to hold off the Cajuns.
At the no. 4 position, Pachon fell behind in the first set but rallied to earn another point for the Cajuns with a 2-6, 6-4, 10-5 victory.
Nilsson, playing at no. 5 singles, took care of John Haley in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4.
The Cajuns will now have some time off to prepare for their first conference match on Friday, March 25 as they host Troy. First serve is set for 3 p.m. CT.
