Southeast Missouri plated nine runs over the first four innings and the pitching staff stymied Louisiana again leading to a 9-1 victory in game two of the season opening series Saturday afternoon at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field.
Louie Haseltine led the charge for Redhawks (2-0) with three RBI coming on a three-run home run in the first inning. Jon Dicus was solid on the mound tossing five innings and holding the Cajuns to one run on seven hits.
For Louisiana (0-2) senior lefty T.J. Geith was touched for five earned runs over three innings in his season debut.
The two teams conclude their three-game series on Sunday at 1 p.m. Joey Satriano will take the mound for the Cajuns and he'll be opposed by Brad LaBruyere.
Tyler Frederick and Ryan Leonards each posted two hits to lead the UL offense. Leonards, a freshman for nearby Crowley, has opened his rookie campaign with back-to-back multiple-hit games.
Senior Randall Bulliard delivered a strong relief outing for the Cajuns, tossing 4 1/3 innings and facing only one batter over the minimum.
A crowd of 3,483 were on hand increasing the weekend series attendance total to 7,251. The Cajuns are another good crowd away from establishing the all-time weekend series mark at "The Tigue" (present mark is 9,032 vs. South Alabama May 16-18, 2003).
Haseltine's three-run home run in the first inning gave SEMO an early 3-0 lead.
A pair of two-out hits - a double by Taylor Heon and single by Kenton Parmley - allowed the Redhawks to extend the lead by one run in the top of the second inning.
The Redhawks created traffic in the third inning and pushed across two more runs increasing the lead to 6-0.
Michael Adamson led off with a single then Geith hit Casey Jones. Jordan Poirrier dropped the relay on a double play ball that was hit to shortstop allowing Jones to reach second and the bases were loaded. Blake Slattery and Trenton Moses lifted sacrifice flies to produce SEMO's runs.
For the fourth straight inning the Redhawks added runs, putting up a three-spot in the fourth inning to stretch the lead to 9-0.
A Greg Fontenot double and Leonards single opened the Cajuns half of the sixth inning and Dicus gave way to reliever Kirk Boeller. Jordan Bourque greeted Boeller with an RBI single to left field to score Fontenot with the Cajuns first and only run of the contest.
Boeller would issue a two-out walk to Frederick and UL had bases loaded. The opportunity for a crooked number in the inning slipped by as Matt Goulas struck out looking.
