MT (2-2, 1-0 Sun Belt) used two long-scoring plays - a 62 yard touchdown pass and 74 yard rushing touchdown - in the third quarter to open a 20-point edge by quarters end. The defense held the Ragin' Cajuns (1-2, 1-1 Sun Belt) to 140 yards on 39 plays in the second half.
Logan Kilgore completed 21-of-36 passes for 207 yards and Phillip Tanner rushed for 104 yards. Eleven different receivers combined to catch passes from Kilgore.
For UL, Chris Masson completed 16-of-32 passes for 192 yards. Kevis Streeter was the top rusher for the Cajuns with 63 yards and Javone Lawson had a team-best 53 yards receiving.
The Blue Raiders jumped ahead in the first quarter on a 40-yard field goal. The Cajuns looked to tie on a field goal of their own later in the first, but the attempt from 41 yards was blocked. After the block, Middle Tennessee drove 76 yards in 14 plays to increase its lead.
The Cajuns responded with a sustained 10-play, 70-yard drive of their own. Masson found Ladarius Green in the back of the end zone to cut MT's lead to three points. The three-yard pass to Green was the tight end's third touchdown of the season.
In the blink of an eye, the Blue Raiders scored again. It took 47 seconds for Middle to cover 60 yards in four plays to grab a 17-7 lead.
Things swung back in favor for UL after Dwight Bentley picked off Kilgore and returned the ball to the MT 31-yard line. Five plays later, Blaine Gautier rushed around the right end for a two-yard touchdown with 3:04 remaining in the first half.
The Blue Raiders were able to tack on another three points before the half with 55-yard field goal by Alan Grendreau.
To start the second half, UL would be forced to punt on its first possession. The defense held MT to no gain on the first two plays, but on third down the Blue Raiders connected on a 62-yard pass play to make the score 27-14.
The Blue Raiders struck again on another big play with D.D. Kyles scoring on a 74-yard run near the end of the third quarter.
Kyles' score closed out the scoring for the contest as both teams played a scoreless fourth quarter.
Louisiana returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 2 in Denton, Texas against North Texas at Fouts Field. The game, set for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff, will be aired on the Sun Belt Network.
