STARTING PITCHERS
LHP Taylor Hubbell (UL) vs. RHP Jay Reese (HBU)
A New Beginning: Sticking with head coach Tony Robichaux's theme of putting the first half of the season behind them and focusing on what the team can become in the second half, the Ragin' Cajuns turned in a perfect 4-0 record last week. It began with a well-managed 4-3 win over Northwestern State and culminated with a three-game sweep of Sun Belt rival Troy.
HBU Series (UL leads 9-0): Louisiana and Houston Baptist meet for the first time since 2001. The Ragin' Cajuns swept a three-game series that was held March 9-10, 2001. That season the Huskies were coached by Brian Huddleston and current head coach Jared Moon was an assistant. Overall, the Ragin' Cajuns are 9-0 vs. HBU with all meetings having been played at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field. Programs met in three-game series in the 1991 and 1992 seasons when the Cajuns were coached by Mike Boulanger.
Quick Reset: The Ragin' Cajuns picked up their first Sun Belt series win of the 2010 season with a three-game sweep of Troy at "The Tigue" last weekend. Zach Osborne fired a complete game, one-hit shutout of the Trojans on Friday. On Saturday, UL sent eight batters to the plate and scored seven runs in the fourth to erase a 3-0 deficit and Justin Robichaux slammed the door by retiring all nine hitters he faced. On Sunday, Greg Fontenot and Jordan Poirrier homered in the seventh to answer a three-spot from Troy and reclaim the lead. Ryland Parker secured the win with 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief.
Fontenot Delivers: Greg Fontenot had three multiple-hit games last week and played a key role in securing Louisiana's first Sun Belt series win, and eventually sweep. On Saturday, the senior singled to center field to drive home Alex Fuselier with the go-ahead run in the series clincher. Then on Sunday, Fontenot laced his first home run of the season in the seventh to answer Troy's three-spot in the top of the inning and tie the game at 5-all. He would come through with the bases loaded in the eighth inning sending a bouncing single up the middle to plate two insurance runs - his third bases loaded hit of the season.
Park It: Reliever Ryland Parker emerged out the Cajuns bullpen with impressive outings last week. In two appearances - at NSU and Sunday vs. Troy - Parker allowed just one hit over a 4 2/3 innings span. In his last five appearances Parker has held opponents to only two hits and struck out nine over 7 2/3 innings pitched.
He's Back: Justin Robichaux left no doubt that he's returned to being a force on the pitching mound last Saturday vs. Troy. The senior righty retired all nine hitters he faced and earned the save in the series clincher.
Untouchable After Six: UL is 15-3 when scoring six-plus runs.
