Baseball Drops Game 3 At Troy

TROY, Ala. ? Louisiana's Ragin'
Cajuns fell short of a weekend sweep of Troy as UL lost 12-3 to Troy, wrapping
up an otherwise productive series. The Cajuns finish the weekend at 20-21-1
overall and 10-13 in the Sun Belt Conference.
Les Smith headlined Louisiana with a two-run home run in the fourth inning and went
1-for-4 overall, and Matt Goulas gave the Cajuns their only other RBI on
2-for-4 hitting. Scott Hawkins matched him with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
Louisiana
starter Alex Fuselier lasted just one inning plus four batters in the second,
leaving after allowing five runs, all earned, on five hits, two walks and no
strikeouts. He took the loss, falling to 2-2 on the season. Greg Harmon soaked
up some innings in long relief, getting the Cajuns through the seventh plus one
batter in the eighth. He allowed three runs, all earned, on nine hits, no walks
and two strikeouts.
Blake Haagen relieved Harmon with no one out in the eighth, and got through just one
out before throwing the ball away on a pickoff attempt at first and allowing a
single to bring the runner in from third. He gave way to Matt Broussard, who
did not fare much better. He issued a walk, a wild pitch, a hit by pitch, a
triple and single as the Trojans scored three runs before finally grounding out
to end the inning. Haagen finished 1/3 of an inning on one hit and one run,
earned, while Broussard allowed two hits and three runs, all earned, with one
walk in 2/3 of an inning.
The
Trojans were first on the board for the first time this weekend, with two runs
in the first inning off Fuselier.
In
the second, Fuselier allowed the bases to load with no outs and gave up a
two-run double to give the Trojans a 4-0 lead. The double forced Fuselier out
in favor of Greg Harmon. One of Fuselier's runners scored on a groundout, but
the other was caught on the back end of a 4-3-5 double play trying to sneak a
bonus bag. The Trojans went to the third protecting a 5-0 lead.
Les Smith got the Cajuns on the board in the fourth with a two-run home run with
Scott Hawkins on base, belting it over the 30-foot wall containing the scoreboard
in right field, in nearly the same spot Travis Whipple hit his solo bomb during
Saturday's game.
In
the fifth inning, Matt Goulas earned a two-out RBI when he drove in Kyle Olasin
from second with a single to left field. That sent the Cajuns to the bottom of
the fifth down 5-3.
Harmon
gave up his first run in the sixth with a runner on third when designated
hitter Michael Precise lined a single into center field to extend the Trojans'
advantage to 6-3.
The
Trojans added another in the seventh on an RBI double to left field, when Miles
Hoyle barely got under a tag from Thad Griffen on a good throw from Matt Goulas
in the outfield.
Troy
got one more in the bottom of the eighth after Steve Rosado singled his way on,
moved to third on an error during a pickoff attempt and came around on a single
to center field to make it an 8-3 game. Then with the bases loaded and Matt Broussard on the mound, Steven Felix cleared the bases with a triple, and came
home himself on a subsequent single, completing a five-run Trojans' eighth and
blowing the game out to 12-3.
NOTES
· Chad Keefer is now
owner of the Cajuns' longest hitting streak at seven games.
· The Cajuns won the
first two games and dropped the third in their last trip to Troy in 2007.
