Cajuns Claim Game 1; Game 2 Delayed

4/18/2009 9:45:00 PM | Softball

LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball team opened up a three-game Sun Belt Conference series with the Troy Trojans with a 4-2 victory.  The Cajuns were leading 3-1 in the third inning of game two before inclement weather in the Lafayette area cause a delay until Sunday afternoon.

The conclusion of game two will begin at 12:00 p.m. with the final game of the series to be played at 2:00 p.m.

GAME 1 RECAP

Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball team opened up the three game tilt with a 4-2 victory over the Troy Trojans.

Donna Bourgeois picked up her 21st victory of the season, tossing a complete game.  She surrendered a pair of runs, but just one earned run.  Bourgeois struck out eight batters without allowing a walk.  She faced five batters over the minimum, surrendering four hits.  Bourgeois had a perfect game with two outs in the fourth inning until a single by the Trojans.

Offensively, Vallie Gaspard and Erikka Murphy each had a pair of hits.  Gaspard drove in a pair of runs in the second and Melissa Verde drove in the other two runs with a double in the fourth inning.

The Cajuns broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the second inning.  With two outs, Lana Bowers reached base as she was hit by a pitch.  Kelly Cormier followed with a single to short and Erikka Murphy loaded the bases with a second infield single.  Gaspard singled to left center field to score Bowers and Cormier and give the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.

Louisiana added two more runs in the fourth inning on a Verde double.  Cormier reached base on a fielding error by the Trojans.  Murphy followed with a single to give UL a pair of base runners.  Gaspard followed with an infield single to load the bases.  Following a line out to short, Verde hit a line drive down the right field line to score two and increase the Cajuns' lead to 4-0.

Troy cut the Cajuns' lead by one with a run in the top of the fifth inning.  Heidi Johnson hit a solo home run to center field to become the first player this season to hit a home off of Bourgeois.  The home run was just the third allowed by Bourgeois in her two-year career and just the fifth allowed by UL this season (first in Sun Belt Conference play).

The Trojans added a run in the top of the seventh, but Bourgeois closed out the game with her eighth strikeout of the game to secure the victory.

GAME 2 RESULTS

The Cajuns were leading game two by a score of 3-1 before inclement weather halted play.  The big play of the game was a two-run homer from freshman Christi Orgeron.  The home run was the freshman's second of the season and gave the Cajuns a two-run cushion.

Troy was the first team to score in the second game.  In the first inning, Bourgeois surrendered back-to-back two-out walks which proved to be costly as a single to left center field plated a run and saw the Cajuns trailing 1-0 after a half an inning of play.

The Cajuns wasted little in taking a 3-1 lead, scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Gaspard started the game with a leadoff walk.  A sacrifice advanced Gaspard to second and a ground ball off of the pitcher's leg moved the runner to third base.  A throwing error by the Trojans scored Gaspard from third and allowed Gabriele Bridges to reach second base.  Orgeron wasted little time plating the runner as she homered to left field.  The home run was her second of the season and first at Lamson Park.  After one complete inning of play, the Cajuns led 3-1.

Both teams were held scoreless in the second inning and the Cajuns kept Troy off of the scoreboard in the third inning.  Louisiana had two outs in the bottom of the third inning when the game was suspended.
