LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's women's tennis team played host to Rice Sunday, Feb. 8.  The Cajuns, now 0-4, fell in a tough match with #69 Rice Owls, now 6-1, losing all doubles and singles matches.

Louisiana had a hard start, losing all three doubles matches. Rice's Julie Chao and Ana Guzman beat Milou Israel and Julie Mazinova 8-3. Jessica Jackson and Varsha Shiva-Shankar of Rice defeated Mia Gordon and Angela Dangond 8-2. Rice's Becca Lin and Alex Rasch defeated Marina Ruiz de Guana and Tara Vasovic 8-3.  With the three doubles wins, Rice took a 1-0 lead into the singles matches.

UL had a rough fall again in the singles matches, losing all six. Vasovic tweaked an ankle in the doubles match and was unable to preform at her best. Losing 6-1, 6-1 to Rice's Alex Rasch, she should be ready for the Cajuns next match.

Angela Dangond of UL lost 6-1, 6-1 to Jessica Jackson of Rice. Jackson's win gave the Owls a 3-0 lead.

Unfortunately Marina Ruiz de Gauna lost 6-2, 6-2 to Rice's Varsha Shiva-Shankar, and it meant that Cajuns would fall to 0-4 on the young season.

UL's Milou Israel fell to Rice's Ana Guzman 6-3. 6-4.

Mia Gordon was defeated by Becca Lin of Rice 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

UL's Julie Mazinova was involved in another heart-stopping match on center court. Unfortunately, Mazinova was unable to beat Rice's number one Julie Chao.  Mazinova lost in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4)

"I was very frustrated with the way we came out during the doubles portion," said Coach Tina Samara. She added, "Right now it is tough, Angela has a little bit of a cold and it has passed to a couple more people on the team, and Tara hurt her ankle. It is especially tough when we only have six people."

The Cajuns will be traveling to California for the next three matches to take on Loyola Marymount, California State Northridge and UC Irvine.  Next home game is set for Saturday, February 28 at 10 a.m. against LSU.
