LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball team needed extra innings for the second consecutive game as they down Kentucky, 5-2, in nine innings in the final game of day one at the Mardi Gras Invitational at Alfred and Helen Lamson Park.

Tied 2-2, Gabriele Bridges led off the inning with a single to left field.  The Wildcats left fielder threw the ball away allowing Bridges to advance all the way to third base.  Lana Bowers was hit by a pitch to give UL runners on the corners.  After an out, Kelly Cormier walked to load the bases.  A wild pitch plated pitch runner Courtney Trahan for the go-ahead run.

With runners on second and third, Christi Orgeron hit a sacrifice fly to give the Cajuns a two-run advantage.  A second error by Kentucky allowed Cormier to score and give Louisiana a 5-2 lead, which they would hold.

After surrendering a pair of runs in the first inning, the Cajuns used solid defense and stellar pitching to hold the Wildcats scoreless for the next eight innings.

Donna Bourgeois, who worked 7.0 innings in the Cajuns' first game of the day, threw a complete game in the night cap.  Bourgeois scattered five hits in 9.0 innings of work.  She struck out 13 batters in the game, while issuing just four walks.  Bourgeois held Kentucky in check causing the Wildcats to leave 11 batters stranded, including seven in scoring position.

The Cajuns offense collected five hits in the game, including a double by Melissa Verde.  Katie Smith finished the game with a pair of hits, while Verde led the team with two RBI.

Kentucky was the first team to scratch the scoreboard.  A hit batter and a walk started off the inning and a bunt single loaded the bases.  A two-run single gave the Wildcats a 2-0 lead after one inning.

In the third inning, the Cajuns started off the inning with back-to-back bunt singles by Smith and Karli Hubbard to give UL a pair of base runners.  Verde lifted a 2-2 pitch into left center field for a two-run double to tie the score at 2-2.

The Ragin' Cajuns softball team will continue the play in the 2009 Mardi Gras Invitational with a pair of games on Saturday.  The Cajuns will play San Diego State and Kentucky.
