LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball team improved to 4-0 in the 23rd Annual Louisiana Classics Softball Tournament as they downed in-state rival Nicholls State, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at Alfred and Helen Lamson Ragin' Cajuns Softball Park.

Donna Bourgeois was once again stellar.  The sophomore allowed just one run in 7.0 innings of work.  She fanned 12 batters in the game while surrendering just a pair of walks.  The Lafayette native has recorded double-digit strikeouts in three of her four starts this season.  Bourgeois scattered seven hits in the game with only one extra base hit.

The Cajuns offense collected eight hits as a team including four extra base hits.  Eight different Ragin' Cajuns batters registered hits in the game.

Two of Louisiana's slap hitters collected triples on the afternoon.  Karli Hubbard recorded her second career triple in the first inning, while Vallie Gaspard posted her first collegiate triple.

Codi Runyan and Jessica Dupont both had doubles in the game.

Dupont, Gaspard and Christi Orgeron each had RBI for the Cajuns and Hubbard finished the game with a pair of runs scored.

The Cajuns were the first team to strike.  In the first inning, Hubbard tripled to center field for the first base runner of the game.  Melissa Verde walked to give the Cajuns runners on the corners.  Courtney Trahan entered the game to run for Verde.  With excellent speed on the bases, Louisiana successfully executed a double steal to score Hubbard from third and give UL a 1-0 advantage.

UL increased their lead to 4-0 in the top of the second inning.  Runyan hit a deep fly ball that was dropped by the NSU left fielder to start things off for the Cajuns.  An RBI double down the left field line by Dupont plated Runyan.  The Ragin' Cajuns used a triple by Gaspard to score Dupont and leave the Cajuns with a runner 60-feet from home.  A wild pitch scored Gaspard from third and gave UL a four-run cushion.

The Ragin' Cajuns added a run in the third inning.  Runyan doubled to right field with two outs.  She advanced to third on a wild pitch.  Following a Dupont walk, Orgeron singled through the right side to score Runyan and give UL a 5-0 lead.

Nicholls State plated a run in the bottom of the seventh inning, but could get no closer as the Cajuns secured the 5-1 victory.

The Ragin' Cajuns return to action on Friday as they play host to the Fifth Annual Mardi Gras Classic at Lamson Park.  The Cajuns welcome UConn, Kentucky and San Diego State to Lafayette.
