DENTON, Texas ? Texas Tech handed Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns a 3-1 loss by scores of 33-31, 19-25, 16-25 and 19-25 on the first day of the Spike Ike Classic held at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.
The loss drops the Cajuns to 2-5 on the season. After a lengthy first set, Texas Tech changed their game plan in order to get past Louisiana.
“(Texas Tech) changed what they were doing and we tried to adjust,” Head Coach Heather Mazeitis said. “We struggled to shut down their U.S. Women's Junior National middle blocker Amanda Dowdy.”
The offensive attack faltered after two good outings on Tuesday and Wednesday, as the Cajuns put up 40 kills against the Red Raiders' 57. The hitting crew allowed attack errors to impact the match with 34 total.
“Our offensive production troubles came back a little bit, and we struggled from the outside,” Mazeitis said. “Hopefully we will bounce back and play well again tonight against Texas-Pan American.”
Freshman Lesley Mirarchi continues to impress, today slamming a team-leading 10 kills in 20 attempts. She tacked on two solo blocks and three block assists.
Caroline Dufrene notched nine kills and two block assists, while Elizabeth Inman knocked down eight kills to go with two solo blocks and one block assist. 32 kills came on assists from setter Kendra Hall.
The Cajuns play again Friday at 5 p.m. against Texas-Pan American in their second game of Spike Ike. Saturday features a 10 a.m. rematch of Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin. SFA took the 3-0 win in the Cajuns' home opener on Tuesday, Sept. 9.
