LAFAYETTE ? Despite a match-high 17 kills by Elizabeth Inman (Fort Worth, Texas), Central Arkansas dominated Louisiana as the Sugar Bears bounced back from a game one loss to take a 3-1 win over the Ragin' Cajuns Saturday night. The win solidified a 3-0 mark for the Sugar Bears as well as the 2007 Capital One Ragin' Cajuns Classic title.
Senior Erika Castro (San Antonio, Texas) was UL's lone representative on the All-Tournament team, finishing the night with a team-best 20 kills. Castro finished the weekend with 55 kills, moving her into fifth place on the school's all-time list (1,147).
Amie Goodwin (Tucson, Ariz.) recorded 11 kills and nine digs, falling one dig short of tallying her third straight double-double. On the flip side, Lindsay Brown (Yorba Linda, Calif.) fell one kill short of her second straight double-double, finishing the night cap with nine kills and 20 digs.
For the second straight match, senior Tara Côtè (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) and sophomore Kendra Hall (Dallas, Texas) split time at setter. Côtè led the team with 29 assists, while Hall added 12 helps.
Inman registered four blocks, followed by Côtè, Tracie Knowlton (Forest Grove, Ore.) and Monica Deschaine (Boerne, Texas) who each finished with three rejections.
Central Arkansas (3-0) had three players with double-figure kills ? Chloe Smith (12), Amicha Williams (12) and Natalie Lundquist (11). Williams also added 12 digs. Williams, Smith and Robyn Smith were all voted to the All-Tournament Team.
Louisiana (1-2) jumped out to 1-0 lead, taking game one by a 30-25 score. The Cajuns hit .190 in the first game behind five kills from Inman and four more from Goodwin. UL was able to hold the Sugar Bears to a .043 attack percentage, as UCA committed 12 attack errors in the opening frame.
After game one, UCA dominated the rest of the way. UL committed 11 attack errors, while the Sugar Bears committed just three errors in game two en route to the 30-20 victory. UCA hit a solid .364, tallying 15 kills on 33 total attacks, while the Cajuns had a zero hitting percentage ? 11 kills and 11 errors on 44 total attacks.
Game three didn't get any better for the Cajuns as UL again struggled offensively, compiling a zero attack percentage. UCA registered a match-high 17 kills in game three, winning the frame 30-22.
The Sugar Bears closed the door on the Cajuns in the fourth and final game, hitting .283 to take the 30-23 game four victory. UL registered a match-high 16 kills in the final frame, despite committing nine attack errors.
Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team returns to action Tuesday, Aug. 28, when they travel to Beaumont, Texas, to face the Lamar Cardinals. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m. at McDonald Gym.
