Cajuns Remain Perfect with Strong Pitching

Cuevas struck out seven WSU hitters and worked out of several jams in protecting a 1-0 lead in the final six innings.
The Ragin' Cajuns (5-0) got the one run they needed in the top of the second inning when Karli Hubbard executed a bunt single with the bases loaded.
Desi Chatman led off the second inning with a double down the left field line. WSU starter Ashly Bright then issued walks to Melissa Verde and Lana Bowers to load the bases.
Hubbard worked the count and eventually put down the bunt with two strikes against her. Her bunt spun around in the dirt and by the time WSU third baseman Stephanie de La Riva fielded the ball there was no play at first base and by the time the throw went home Chatman had already scored giving the Cajuns a 1-0 edge.
Cuevas stranded two WSU base runners in both the fourth and fifth innings in order to preserve the shutout.
In the sixth inning the Shockers had a runner on third base with two outs and Cuevas got Tawnya Guthrie to foul out at first base for the final out. The Cajuns defense also stood tall in the inning after WSU got two runners on and no outs. Tara Hamilton turned a
Cuevas picked up her third win of the Louisiana Classics to finish opening weekend with a 3-0 mark. She lowered her season ERA to 0.78 and extended her string of consecutive innings without allowing a walk to 18 straight.
Bright took the tough loss for the Shockers (1-5) who were sent to their fifth straight defeat. Bright scattered five hits over seven innings and twice worked out of bases loaded jams to strand three UL base runners.
