UL collected a season high 21 hits as they routed the Indians

Tuesday, April 11, 2006

MONROE, La.-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns used an eight-run inning to break open the ball game as they downed in-state rival Louisiana-Monroe, 11-0, at Indian Field on Tuesday night.

The Cajuns (20-12) offense dominated on the night as UL collected a season high 21 hits in the game. UL scored eight runs on eight hits in the top of the fifth inning to break the game open and never looked back.

The Ragin' Cajuns extended their winning streak to four games and have now won four in a row against Louisiana-Monroe.

Jameson Parker tied the Ragin' Cajuns record for most hits in a game. The senior finished the game going a perfect 5-for-5. He scored a pair of runs and had one of the Cajuns' 11 RBI.

Devery Van De Keere and Tim Santiago both had four hits on the night. Van De Keere finished the night 4-for-5, with a triple, a run scored and an RBI, while Santiago finished the game 4-for-4 with a run scored and two runs batted in.

Senior Alex Preciado extended his hitting streak to 12 games in impressive fashion. He had three hits on the evening and also scored three of UL's 11 runs.

Devon Bourque was the only other Ragin' Cajuns fielder to have multiple hits on the night. The junior had a pair of hits and also reached base thanks to two walks.

Four separate Ragin' Cajuns players finished the game with multiple RBI.

The Cajuns pitching staff did not pitch extremely well but were effective in shutting out the Indians. Danny Farquhar (3-1) earned the win pitching 4.0 shutout innings. The outing was the first time in Farquhar's Cajuns career that he did not have a strikeout in a game he has pitched.

Greg Wilborn pitched 3.0 scoreless innings in relief, while Matt Pilgreen and Chad Beck both added an inning of shutout ball apiece. The Cajuns had four strikeouts on the night with Wilborn and Beck splitting the K total with two each.

The Ragin' Cajuns broke the game open in the fifth inning. Leading 2-0, UL scored eight runs on eight hits to give the Cajuns a 10-0 advantage. Preciado singled to centerfield to give the Cajuns their first hit of the inning. Jefferies Tatford doubled to right centerfield to plate Preciado. With a runner on and no one out, Santiago laid down a perfect bunt to third base to advance Tatford to third base. Josh Landry hit an RBI single up the middle to plate Tatford and give the Cajuns their first multiple run inning of the night. Parker tripled to bring Landry home. Bourque singled to second base, scoring Parker. Van De Keere singled through the right side to extend the inning. Scott Hawkins entered the game to pinch hit and tripled to left centerfield to clear the bases. Preciado walked in his second plate appearance of the inning. Tatford followed Preciado with a base on balls to load the bases for the Cajuns. Santiago singled to score Hawkins and Preciado and make the score 10-0.

The Ragin' Cajuns scratched the scoreboard first on the night. Preciado led off the second inning with a single up the middle. He advanced to second base on a wild pitch. A single by Santiago moved Preciado to third base. Preciado came around to score as Landry hit his team-leading seventh sacrifice fly making the score 1-0.

In the fourth inning, Santiago led off the inning with a walk. The walk was only the second time on the night the leadoff batter reached base for the Ragin' Cajuns. Preciado led off the second inning, reaching base with a single. Much like Preciado in the second inning, Santiago advanced to second base thanks to a wild pitch. He advanced to third base on a Parker single. Santiago came into score as Bourque slipped an RBI single through the right side. After three and a half innings of play, the Cajuns led 2-0.

The Cajuns would continue to lead 2-0 until the eight-run fifth inning.

In the UL half of the sixth inning, the Ragin' Cajuns added an insurance run. Parker singled up the middle and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. John McCarthy, whose 10-game hitting streak was snapped on the night, drew a base on balls to give the Cajuns a pair of baserunners. The two runners advanced on the second wild pitch of the inning. Bourque walked to load the bases. Louisiana-Lafayette was only able to get one run across as Parker scored on a Van De Keere groundout.

The Ragin' Cajuns will continue their midweek road swing on Wednesday as they head to Ruston to take on Louisiana Tech at J.C. Love Field. The game will be the second game in as many weeks that the two teams have played each other. The Bulldogs got the best of the Cajuns, winning 6-3. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. and can be heard on ESPN Radio 1420 in Lafayette.
