SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns finished the 2006 Baseball Express Collegiate Baseball Classic with a 5-2 loss in 12 innings to tournament host Texas-San Antonio.
With two runners on base and the score tied at 2-2 in top of the 12th inning, the Roadrunners' J.R. Voyles lifted a ball over the left field fence to give UTSA a 5-2 advantage.
With one out in the bottom of the 12th inning, freshman Scott Hawkins hit a double to deep centerfield to give the Cajuns a runner in scoring position. A groundout advanced Hawkins to third base, but UL was unable to get any closer ending the game on a groundout to second base.
The Cajuns (8-5) fell despite quality pitching on the afternoon.
Starting pitcher Buddy Glass pitched 7.0 innings allowing just a pair of runs. The sophomore struck out four batters allowing just one walk.
Chad Beck entered the game in relief, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing no runs on one hit, fanning five.
Senior Brandt Sanders took the loss for the Cajuns. Sanders allowed three runs on just on hit ? Voyles homer in the top of the 12th inning.
Offensively, only three Cajuns managed to get a hit in the game.
Alex Preciado was a perfect 4-four-4 on the afternoon at the plate. The senior had two doubles and scored one of the Cajuns runs.
The Cajuns other run came from Jameson Parker. The shortstop had two hits including a solo homerun, which tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
Freshman Scott Hawkins had his first multiple hit game of his young UL career, going 2-for-4 on the day.
Neither team could generate any offense in the early goings. The two teams combined for seven hits in the first six innings of the game.
Texas-San Antonio was the first team to score a run. UTSA's Lee Todesco homered to right field in the top of the seventh to the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.
The Cajuns answered in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Preciado led off the inning with a double down the leftfield line. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to third base. John McCarthy grounded out to the pitcher to plate the runner.
In the top of the eighth inning, Phillip Allen led off the inning with a single to leftfield. Allen advanced to third base on consecutive balks by Glass. A single up the middle by Marshal Davis plated the runner giving the Roadrunners a 2-1 advantage.
Parker tied the game with his first homerun of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The game would remain tied until the Roadrunners' three-run homerun in the 12th inning.
The Ragin' Cajuns will return to action on Wednesday, March 15 as UL travels to Lake Charles to take on in-state rival McNeese State at 6:30 p.m. The Cajuns will return to M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field for a three-game series against Minnesota on Friday, March 17 through Sunday, March 19.
