Lafayette-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team broke its three game home losing streak defeating the Troy Trojans 70-59 Saturday night at Earl K. Long Gymnasium.

UL went into the locker room at halftime with an eleven point and played even with the Trojans in the second half as the Cajuns improved to 16-8 on the season 6-6 in Sun Belt Conference play.

The Trojans (8-14, 2-9 SBC) would trail by as many as 13 points in the second half and would pull to within five points late in the game, but would get no closer.

The Cajuns defense held the Trojans to just 21 field goals on the night, but Troy connected on 10 three pointers, a high for a Cajuns' opponent this season, to keep the score close.

UL's defense caused 18 turnovers on the night, leading to 22 Cajuns points.

The Ragin' Cajuns out rebounded the Trojans 47-to-36, including a 22-to-7 offensive rebounding advantage.

Yolanda Jones led all scorers with 27 points on the evening. Jeanenne Colbert added 16 for the Cajuns while Sonora Edwards contributed 14 points in the win.

Jones also pulled down 14 rebounds to give the junior her 12th double-double of the season. Edwards also had a double-dip on the evening as she grabbed 11 boards on the night.

The Cajuns improve to 19-2 under head coach J. Kelley Hall when scoring 70 or more points and the Cajuns are 31-0 when leading at the half under Hall.

Edwards started the game strong. The sophomore center made 10 of the Cajuns first 11 points of the night.

With just under 16-minutes to play, the Cajuns held a one-point advantage, 5-4, thanks to five points by Edwards.

Trailing 13-6, it was Edwards who stepped up once again. Edwards drained a three-pointer to pull the Cajuns within four. Troy responded with a layup, but Edwards brought the Cajuns back scoring her tenth point of the night.

Colbert scored her first basket of the evening, connecting on a triple to cut the Trojan lead to 18-14.

Jones would used a three-pointer to cut the lead to just one-point and a fast break layup to give the Cajuns a 19-18 lead.

The Cajuns would extend their lead as Colbert was fouled on a layup and made the ensuing free throw to complete the three-point play.

Troy would use a three pointer to cut the lead to just one point, but Jones would convert a layup and a free throw to push the UL lead to 25-21 with three and a half minutes to play.

The Cajuns finished out the half with a 7-to-0 run to lead 32-21 at the half.

During the run, freshman Whitney Dunlap blocked a Trojan fast break attempt and intercepted a pass to give the Cajuns the ball. Both the block and steal led to UL baskets.

Three Ragin' Cajuns players entered the lockerroom at halftime in double digits. Edwards scored 10 of the Cajuns first 11 points of the night, while Colbert and Jones had 11 and 10 points respectively.

UL's defense caused 12 Troy turnovers leading to 16 points for the Cajuns in the first half.

The two teams would play even in the second half as the Cajuns downed the Trojans by eleven, 70-59.

With 17:10 remaining in the first half, senior point guard Ashley Blanche intercepted a Troy pass, but collided with a Trojan player. Blanche hit the court hard and had to leave the game. She did not return to the game.

The Cajuns will continue their homestand on Thursday, Feb. 16 as they take on in-state rival and conference foe New Orleans. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Earl K. Long Gymnasium.
