The victory helps the Cajuns improve to 6-5 (3-3), while the loss prevents Arkansas State (6-6, 4-3) from their first winning season since 1995.
For the second week in a row, the Cajuns leaned on running back Tyrell Fenroy. Fenroy posted 26 carries for a career-best 178 yards, while enjoying his third career three touchdown game.
Over the past two weeks, Fenroy has rushed 60 times for 350 yards and five touchdowns. On the season, Fenroy has 196 carries for 1,079 yards, becoming the first player in school history with two 1,000-yard rushing seasons.
UL scored twice in the fourth quarter after ASU used a field goal to cut the Cajuns lead to 14-13 at the 14:53 mark.
The Cajuns lead moved to eight following a seven-play, 80-yard drive covering the next 3:22. Jerry Babb completed two passes totaling 25 yards and Fenroy ran four times for 17 yards before Babb ended the drive with a 23-yard touchdown run.
Fenroy put UL ahead by two scores at the 6:45 mark with his third rushing touchdown. The Cajuns entire 69-yard drive came courtesy of Fenroy. Runs of seven, four and 57 proceeded a one-yard scoring plunge to give the Cajuns a 28-13 edge.
Babb finished the game with 107 yards passing and 74 yards rushing.
The Indians were led by running back Reggie Arnold's 156 rushing yards on just 18 carries. Quarterback Corey Leonard finished with 132 yards passing and 64 yards rushing.
ASU scored on the game's first series. The Indians needed 10 plays to move 54 yards, ending in a 38-yard field goal by Josh Arauco.
A holding penalty on the Cajuns first possession killed UL's opening drive, but a 72-yard punt by Brit Framel saved the Cajuns from giving-up excellent field position.
Starting from their seven-yard line, ASU drove into Cajuns territory, but was forced to punt.
UL took over on their 18-yard line and moved 82 yards on 10 plays for the go-ahead score. Babb started the drive with a 17-yard completion to Phillip Nevels. Then, on fourth-and-one from the UL 44-yard line, Fenroy broke a 22-yard rush into Indians territory.
Babb's third completion of the drive, an 11-yard pass to Derrick Smith on third-and-seven, moved the Cajuns down to the ASU 20-yard line. Michael Desormeaux entered at quarterback and ran for 13 yards. Desormeaux then handed to Fenroy for a seven-yard touchdown run, putting the Cajuns in front 7-3 at 14:16 of the second quarter.
ASU countered with a seven-play, 84-yard scoring drive to re-take the lead with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Leonard to Levi Dejohnette. Arnold paced the drive with three rushes for 43 yards.
Looking for the equalizer, UL moved down to the ASU 29-yard line, but a rush-for-loss and personal foul penalty forced the Cajuns into a third-and-27. Framel's 44-yard punt pinned the Indians at their three-yard line.
Arnold broke loose for 31 yards on a second down run, but his replacement, Cedric Wilkerson, fumbled on the next play. Rodney Hardeway forced the loose ball that was recovered by Joe Bradley at the ASU 42-yard line.
Bradley finished the night with four tackles, two sacks and a fumble recovery.
From there, the Cajuns needed five plays and 94 seconds to take a 14-10advantage. Babb hit Smith for 11 yards before Fenroy busted a 29-yard run to set-up his second touchdown of the game ? a two-yard jaunt.
The Cajuns were in position to score again late in the half, but Babb was intercepted by Khayyam Burns at the ASU 19-yard line with 14 seconds remaining in the half.
ASU needed two field goal attempts to get three more points. Arauco's 24-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter was blocked by Seth Adams. Arauco was then good from 36 yards early in the fourth quarter to trim the Cajuns lead to 14-13 with 14:53 to play in the final quarter.
