MONROE - Brooke Mitchell tossed a complete-game, one-hit shutout
striking out 12 in helping Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball team
bounce back from a loss earlier in the day with a 10-0 mercy-rule win
over Louisiana-Monroe here Sunday in the ULM Mardi Gras Classic.

The Cajuns offense backed up Mitchell (2-1) with 10 runs off of 10 hits
including three home runs.

Danyele Gomez blasted a towering grand slam over the right center field
wall in the top of the sixth inning as UL Lafayette broke open a
four-run game.

Gomez was 2-for-3 at the plate with five RBI.

Brittany Bryant went 3-for-4 with three RBI. The Beaumont, Texas, native
hit two doubles and a two-run home run - a shot which put the finishing
touches on the Cajuns rout of their in-state rival.

Mitchell matched her season-high for strikeouts and increased her
tournament total to 33 over three games.

Mitchell had all but sewn up the fifth no-hitter of her career retiring
the first two ULM batters in the bottom of the sixth. However, ULM's
Heather Hanson laid down a bunt that dug into the ground and spun long
enough for her to beat out the throw.

Mitchell fired back on the next batter getting Courtney Tuggle to go
down swinging for the final out.

The two teams were locked in a pitchers duel through the first three
innings with only Louisiana-Lafayette able to come up with two hits.

Junior catcher Joy Webre broke up the scoreless tie when she connected
on a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth.

The Cajuns added one more in the inning when Lacey Bertucci drew a walk
after Webre's homer and was then brought home by a Bryant double that
clanged off the left field wall.

UL Lafayette scratched for two more runs in the fifth to take a 4-0
lead.

Tiffany Hebert led off the inning with a walk. Hillary Guidry then moved
her over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Gomez then brought Hebert home
with a base hit up the middle.

Gomez later moved over to third on a wild pitch by ULM starter Nicole
Bethurum and scored on a Webre sacrifice fly.

The win moved the Cajuns record to 3-1 and ended the 2004 ULM Mardi Gras
Classic.

Earlier in the day, Georgia Tech took advantage of a two-out error by
Gomez and placed four unearned runs on the board en route to the 4-1 win
over the Cajuns.

The Cajuns opened the scoring in the top half of the second inning when
freshman Holly Tankersley belted a 0-2 offering from GT's Jessica
Sallinger over the right field fence for a 1-0 lead.

The home run was Tankersley's first of her young career and the fourth
by the Cajuns in the tournament.

UL Lafayette ran into trouble in the bottom half of the second with a
two-out error by Gomez at third base prolonging the inning and leading
to four unanswered runs by the Yellow Jackets.

Katie Donovan led off the inning with a single up the middle. After Sara
Wissmann flied out to right field, Kristina Hull drew a walk. Kirin
Kumar lifted a single to shallow center to load the bases.

Louisiana-Lafayette appeared to work its way out of the jam when catcher
Joy Webre picked off Hull at second base.

However, Soraya Reddick hit a grounder to third that Gomez went to scoop
up, but pulled her glove up too early and the ball hopped into left
field allowing Donovan to score and even the game 1-1.

The Yellow Jackets would then push across three more unearned runs to
take a 4-1 lead.

The Cajuns appeared ready to strike back in the top of the third, but
left the bases loaded.

After Ashley Evans drew a leadoff walk in the fourth, Sallinger retired
the next six Cajun batters.

Mitchell kept her teammates in the game never losing her composure after
the second inning mishap. She limited the Yellow Jackets to just three
hits the rest of the way.

UL Lafayette had two runners on base in both the sixth and seventh
innings with an opportunity to tie the game with one swing, but both
times came up short.

The loss was the first of the season for the Cajuns.

Mitchell struck out nine in six innings allowing no earned runs and six
hits.

Sallinger picked up her second win of the tournament striking out nine
and giving up just three hits.

The Cajuns, who made six errors in Saturday's play, made two in the game
both more costly than any of the six Saturday.
