Cajuns in Search of Sun Belt West No. 1 Seed in Arkansas...
The battle for the No. 1 seed out of the Sun Belt Conference's West Division between Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball team and Denver comes down to one final weekend of regular season play.
Louisiana-Lafayette (17-8, 11-2 Sun Belt) must stage its battle on foreign courts in venues that have proven to be tough on the program in the past. On the other hand, Denver (16-9, 10-3 Sun Belt) will enjoy the comforts of home, hosting South Alabama (Thursday) and New Orleans (Saturday) at Magness Arena.
The Ragin' Cajuns begin their quest for the top seed in Jonesboro, Ark., Thursday night as they face off with Arkansas State in a 7:05 p.m., game at ASU's Convocation Center. A win and the Cajuns are assured of at least a share of the SBC West title and a one-game lead over Denver heading into Saturday's finale in Little Rock. A loss, combined with a DU win, and the Cajuns are back into a tie and would be forced to win Saturday to keep any hopes of the No. 1 seed alive.
Louisiana-Lafayette is riding a four-game win streak after topping North Texas 80-67 last Saturday in the 2004-05 regular season home finale. The win over the Mean Green was the Cajuns fourth straight "W" by double digits and marked the third straight game of 80-plus points.
The Cajuns have won 11 of their last 12 SBC games since losing the league opener to Denver on Jan. 8 – in fact, DU is the lone Sun Belt team to defeat the Ragin' Cajuns this season.
Thursday's game could also have a significant bearing on the Cajuns postseason hopes. A sweep of the Arkansas trip combined with a deep run in the Sun Belt Tournament could put this team on the bubble for an at-large berth in the NCAA Touranment.
The Convocation Center has been a stumbling block before for the Ragin' Cajuns. In the 2002-03 season, the Cajuns entered the facility riding a nine-game win streak only to have ASU snap it with an 84-72 victory. ASU does hold an 8-7 lead in all previous meetings held at the Convocation Center.
Arkansas State (13-12, 5-7 Sun Belt) is a team stuck in a downward spiral. The squad entered February with a 5-2 conference record and sat atop the Sun Belt East Division. Since then, the Indians have lost five straight league games (going winless in February) and are a lock for the No. 4 seed out of the East Division.
The Indians got blasted at Middle Tennessee 80-60 in their last outing on Thursday, Feb. 17 and will be playing a game for the first time in a one-week span.
Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Robert Lee, already with the best record after 25 games in a debut season, can tie former mentor Jessie Evans for the most wins in a debut season with a victory Thursday (Evans was 18-13 in his debut season of 1997-98).
The Cajuns have won 15 of their last 20 Sun Belt road outings dating back to the 2002-03 season and are 4-1 on the road this season. ASU is 3-2 at home this season in Sun Belt action, last playing at home on Feb. 10 against Arkansas-Little Rock.
The Series – Louisiana-Lafayette leads 37-15 (14-8 in Sun Belt)...
Thursday's game marks the 53rd all-time between the Cajuns and Indians and first in Jonesboro since Feb. 20, 2003 when Arkansas State claimed an 84-72 win ending the Ragin' Cajuns nine-game win streak that season.
This is the only scheduled meeting between the two teams this season and is the first meeting in the Robert Lee Era.
The two teams are hitting the hardwood in the Convocation Center for the 16th time with ASU holding an 8-7 edge in games played in the facility. The Indians have won two of the last three meetings in Jonesboro – Louisiana-Lafayette's last win in Jonesboro came on Feb. 12, 2000, when the 2000 NCAA Tournament team won 79-75.
The Cajuns lead the series 14-8 since the two teams joined the Sun Belt in 1991-92. ASU holds a 6-4 lead in Sun Belt contests held at the Convocation Center.
The two schools were both members of the American South Conference from 1987-91, establishing a relationship as conference foes which is currently at 18 straight years. Both were members of the Southland Conference from 1971-82 (nine seasons only because two of the seasons the Cajuns were on probation).
The home team has won the last three meetings. The last road team to post a victory in the series was Arkansas State on Feb. 3, 2001, when the Indians won 82-80 in the CAJUNDOME.

Cajuns Most Recently...Defeated North Texas 80-67
LAFAYETTE (Feb. 19, 2005) – Four players scored in double figures, as Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns registered their four straight double-digit Sun Belt Conference victory with an 80-67 win over North Texas here Saturday night at the Cajundome. A season-high 6,954 fans were on hand to watch Senior Night, as the Cajuns win their seventh Sun Belt home game this season.

In the first half, the Mean Green were up by as many as 10 points, 25-15, with 10:00 remaining in the half. The Cajuns used a 16-4 run to take their first lead since the 15:37 mark, 31-29. During the run, five different Cajuns registered a basket. North Texas responded with five unanswered points to regain the lead, 34-31, with 4:31 remaining.

Scoring Big Wins...
Louisiana-Lafayette has won each of its last four games by double-digit margins. In fact, the Ragin' Cajuns have notched double-digit victories 12 times out of 17 total triumphs. Since the New Mexico State game on Jan. 22, the Cajuns have wom by double-digit margins eight times in the last nine games.
The recent four-game stretch of double-digit wins (67-45 vs. South Alabama, 80-68 vs. UNO, 91-49 vs. NMSU, 80-67 vs. NT) has produced an average win margin of 22.3 points per game.
The recent surge has led the Ragin' Cajuns to a +11.0 scoring margin (74.9-63.9) in Sun Belt games only - a figure which ranks first in the SBC.
Last Time vs. ASTATE...Feb. 26, 2004 in Lafayette
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana-Lafayette used a 13-0 second-half run to blow open a three-point game en route to a 82-62 victory over Arkansas State here Thursday night at the Cajundome.
With the win the Cajuns (16-8, 11-3 Sun Belt) snapped a season-high, two–game losing streak, clinched the overall Sun Belt regular season championship and the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Tournament.
The Cajuns held a 32-29 lead at the break and were ahead by just one point, 34-33, after a Kim Adams putback at 17:58. Laurie Bridges answered for UL Lafayette on the other end with a triple that 17:44 gave the Cajuns a 37-33 lead.
An Adams free throw on the ensuing possession for ASU trimmed the lead to 37-34 with 17:24 left to play.
That would be the closest that the Indians would get the rest of the night. Louisiana-Lafayette opened a 13-0 run over the next three minutes that vaulted the hosts into a 50-34 advantage with 14:20 left in the game.
Antoine Landry scored a team-best 17 points in leading five Cajuns that reached double-digits. Brian Hamilton pulled down a team-best eight boards.
UL Lafayette shot 60 percent from the floor (30-of-50) including 64 percent (18-of-28) in the decisive second half. The Cajuns outscored the Indians 50-33 in the second frame.
The Cajuns forced 20 turnovers and picked the Indians pocket 11 times led by four steals by Dwayne Mitchell.
Trailing 61-44, ASU would use an 8-0 run to get the deficit back to single digits 61-52 with 6:44 left to play. The Cajuns then got a free throw from Hamilton at 5:59 to stop the rally and a three-pointer from Landry 25 seconds later gave UL Lafayette a 65-52 edge. The closest ASU would get the rest of the way was on the next possession when Spencer drove the lane to cut it to 65-54.

Last Time in Jonesboro...Feb. 20, 2003 (ASU 84-72)
JONESBORO, Ark. – Arkansas State (12-13, 5-7 Sun Belt) played like a team that had nothing to lose and the Cajuns (18-7, 10-2 Sun Belt) played nothing like a team that entered the game on an eight-game win streak overall had won its last nine games.
ASU used a 10-0 run after a Brad Boyd three-pointer had given UL Lafayette a 54-51 lead with 10:52 left in the game. As a result, the Indians stretched their lead to 61-54 with 7:57 left in the second half and held off a late surge by the Cajuns in claiming an 84-72 upset win over Louisiana-Lafayette in Sun Belt Conference action.
With the win, Arkansas State snaps a three-game losing streak. With the loss, Louisiana-Lafayette sees its season-high eight-game winning streak and its school-record nine-game Sun Belt winning streak come to a screeching halt on the Indians home floor.
Tony Brown led ASU and all scorers with a career-high 25 points and was a factor in putting the final nail in the Cajuns coffin when he heaved a desperation shot from near midcourt, as the shot clock was expiring, that Cajuns center Michael Southall went up a grabbed and was then whistled for goaltending. The Southall miscue gave ASU a 78-66 lead and ended any chance of a UL Lafayette comeback.
Twice in the final five-plus minutes of the game the Cajuns would trimmed the lead to five points. And, twice ASU's Paris London hit key three-pointers. London's first of two three's in the final 4:48 came after a Kenneth Lawrence layup at 5:12 had cut the Indians lead to 64-59. London's three made it 67-59.
Once more the Cajuns would trim the lead down to five. Anthony Johnson was fouled on a three-point attempt and would make all free throw attempts to trim the ASU lead to 70-65. However, London was the Cajuns killer once more, draining another three-pointer on the ensuing possession to put the Indians on top 73-65. The three started a 8-1 run which put the game out of reach for the Cajuns.
ASU made its free throws down the stretch to seal the win over the Cajuns.
UL Lafayette was led by Laurie Bridges' career-high 26 points on 9-of-17 shooting whih included 5-of-12 from beyond the three-point arc. Cedric Williams scored eight and had a team-high six rebounds. Michael Southall had 11 points and Brad Boyd had 10 as the other two Cajuns to score in double figures.

Terrific Thursdays...
The Cajuns enter Thursday's game with Arkansas State sporting a perfect 7-0 record on Thursdays this season.
Lee Enjoying Sparkling Debut Season...
Through 25 games, Louisiana-Lafayette head coach Robert Lee is off to a 17-8 start – that's the fastest to 17 wins by a Louisiana-Lafayette coach and in a debut season in program history, passing up Bobby Paschal (16-9 in 1978-79) for the best start as well.
Former head coach Jessie Evans holds the program record for most wins by a head coach in his debut season (18-13 in 1997-98). Lee needs one more win to tie Evans and two more to set a new debut mark.
Since coming back from NCAA probation in 1975-76, no Cajuns' coach has led his team to a postseason berth in his debut campaign. That's Robert Lee's goal.
The Sun Belt's Road Warriors...
Last season, Louisiana-Lafayette finished 6-2 on the road in conference outings – the most road wins of all the league teams for the second straight season. UL Lafayette went 11-4 on the road in Sun Belt play the last two seasons combined.
The Cajuns are 4-1 on the road this season in Sun Belt play, extending the squad's record in road league contests to 15-5 since the 2002-03 season.
Since the 1999-2000 season, Louisiana-Lafayette has gone 29-15 on the road in Sun Belt play.
Should the Cajuns win these next two games, then they will finish with the league's best road record in conference games only for the third straight season.
Cajuns vs. Sun Belt East Division...
Thursday's game is the Cajuns fourth of five games this season against a team from the Sun Belt East Division. It is also the first of two games on the current Arkansas road swing.
Last season, Louisiana-Lafayette swept through the Sun Belt East Division in regular season play for the first time. The Cajuns will carry a eight-game win streak against SBC East teams heading into Thursday's game with Arkansas State.
The current Arkansas swing gives the Ragin' Cajuns the opportunity to sweep through the Sun Belt East Division for the second straight season. Louisiana-Lafayette has swept the Arkansas road trip twice before - Feb. 21 & 23, 1998 and Feb. 10 & 12, 2000.
The Cajuns are 82-45 overall all-time versus the Sun Belt East teams and are 16-7 in regular season play since the league began divisional play in the 2000-01 season.
