Statistical RecapLAFAYETTE - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns lost their offense en route to a 28-10 defeat by Florida Atlantic on Thursday night at Cajun Field.
Rickey Bustle loses his first game at Cajun Field when leading at halftime. The Cajuns led 10-7 at the break.
UL falls to 1-4, while FAU improves to 1-5.
After a quick start that saw the Cajuns score on the game's opening possession, Louisiana's offense disappeared at the end of the first quarter.
After rolling to 105 yards of total offense in the first quarter, UL struggled to just 69 yards of offense in the second and third quarter combined.
Both teams went scoreless in the second and third quarters, but two touchdowns by FAU in a 3:44 span of the fourth quarter spelled trouble for the Cajuns.
The Owls persistent offensive attack finally broke through. A nine-play, 77-yard drive spanning the third and fourth quarters resulted in 27-yard touchdown pass from Danny Embick to Darrion Porter-Isom at the start of the fourth quarter. FAU took their first lead, 14-10, with 14:49 to play in the final quarter.
The Owls struck again. The visitors needed only 2:08 and five plays to get their third touchdown. Embick found Thomas Parker with a 19-yard scoring pass to complete a 58-yard drive.
The Cajuns took the opening kickoff 67 yards for a score. Tyrell Fenroy scored his second rushing touchdown of the season, a one-yard plunge at 11:49 to give UL a quick 7-0 lead. UL did all their damage on the ground, as Fenroy picked-up 26 yards on five carries and quarterback Michael Desormeaux added two runs for 41 yards.
FAU responded with the help of three Cajuns penalties, the biggest coming on a 15-yard personal foul flag for a late hit.
Embick carved up the Cajuns secondary, going 5-of-6 for 40 yards, including a five-yard touchdown pass to fullback Dominick Walker.
Louisiana came back with a 34-yard field goal to take a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter. The drive's key play came via a 50-yard run by Desormeaux down to the FAU nine yard-line. The Cajuns moved down to the three, but had to settle for Comiskey's triple.
After a 17-point first quarter, both defenses rose to the occasion, allowing 79 total yards in the second quarter.
The Owls had a majority of those yards, but were held off the scoreboard with a pair of missed field goals. The first, a 47-yard attempt by Daniel Kennard was wide left into the wind. The second, a 48-yard attempt was blocked by Michael Adams. It was the 20th block by the Cajuns under head coach Rickey Bustle and the fifth career block by Adams.
The defensive struggle continued through the second quarter and midway into the third stanza until FAU completed a 57-yard flea-flicker down to the Cajuns 23 yard-line. FAU settled for a 35-yard attempt by Kennard, but his attempt sailed wide right.
