LAFAYETTE -
Louisiana's
Ragin' Cajuns went into Saturday night's contest against
Northwestern State looking for a 1-0 record for the
first time under head coach Rickey Bustle.
After building a 14-0 lead, Louisiana held on for a 14-7 victory thanks to terrific fourth quarter defense.
NSU mounted a drive into Cajuns territory late in the fourth quarter. Antwain Spann gave the ball back to the Cajuns with his third career interception at the 2:26 mark.
The Cajuns offense forced the Demons to use all three timeouts before giving the ball back to NSU on their 17-yard line with 1:50 remaining.
The Cajuns defense forced NSU into a fourth-and-seven from the 48-yard line with 29 seconds remaining. Davon Vinson's pass was overthrown and the Cajuns ran out the clock.
Jerry
Babb accounted for both Cajuns touchdowns in the first
half. His first score came on the ground, while his
second came through the air.
A bad snap killed the Cajuns second drive of the game, but set-up their first touchdown.
A bad snap by the Demons on fourth down botched NSU's attempt to punt. UL Lafayette's Kemmie Lewis recovered the fumble on the Demons' 10-yard line.
Three plays by the Cajuns gained just eight yards, but on fourth-and-goal, Babb scampered in for the score to give the hosts a 7-0 lead.
The Demons came back, driving 51 yards to the Cajuns 16 where Josh Storrs lined-up for a 35-yard field goal attempt. Storrs' kick was blocked by Ken Haynes. Michael Adams scooped the ball and dashed 50 yards to the NSU 25-yard line.
The Cajuns needed six plays to travel 25 yards. A pair of runs by Chester Johnson preceded four passing attempts by Babb. Both completions went to Travis Smothers, with the later a 10-yard touchdown strike.
NSU closed the gap late in the second quarter. An eight-play, 80-yard drive concluded with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Vinson to Derrick Doyle.
The Cajuns
missed on a pair of opportunities to score in the second
half.
In the third quarter, UL moved 48 yards on eight plays down to the NSU seven-yard line. The snap was fumbled by Babb on first-and-goal and returned 14 yards to the 27-yard line where the Demons took over.
Sean Comiskey missed his second field goal of the game early in the fourth quarter. Comiskey's 50-yard kick was wide left. He was short from 51 yards at the end of the first half.
