LAFAYETTE
- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns softball team took home both of
the top softball weekly honors handed out by the Louisiana
Sports Writers Association on Tuesday.
Junior shortstop Tiffany Hebert and junior pitcher Brooke Mitchell swept the weekly honors for softball players of the week as selected by the LSWA.
Hebert, the first-year starter from Breaux Bridge, earned Hitter of the Week honors, while Pasadena, Texas, native and 2004 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award finalist Brooke Mitchell was named the Pitcher of the Week.
Hebert's selection marked the second straight week that Louisiana-Lafayette won the Hitter of the Week Award. Last week, Holly Tankersley was the state's top hitter.
Hebert
(left), the nine-hole hitter for the Cajuns, was 5-of-7 at
the plate (.714) with two home runs, four RBI and four runs
scored in the sweep of New Mexico State.
She ended the series with a 1.571 slugging percentage, collecting 11 total bases in seven at bats, and had a sparkling .714 on-base percentage.
Hebert was 3-for-4 with three RBI in the Cajuns doubleheader sweep on Saturday. In all, her performance at the plate raised her batting average 48 points to .210.
Mitchell,
this week's Sun Belt Pitcher of the Week, had another good
weekend for the Ragin Cajuns in the pitching circle, picking
up all three wins against New Mexico State to give her 29
for the year which moves her into the Top 5 on the
single-season charts.
She tossed 11 innings allowing just four hits while striking out 16 in abbreviated appearances.
The right-handed ace combined for two shut outs and held the Aggies to a .114 batting average.
Mitchell's fourth strikeout of the second game Saturday marked the 800th of her career making her the second pitcher in Louisiana Lafayette history to reach that mark.
The Ragin' Cajuns (35-4, 3-0 Sun Belt) return to action on Wednesday, April 14 in a 4 p.m., doubleheader at Louisiana Tech in Ruston. The squad will be back at home this weekend for a key Sun Belt series with Florida International April 17-18 at Ragin' Cajuns Softball Park.
