Cajuns Wrap Up Weekend at Ty Terrel and Tiger Relays

BATON ROUGE - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns track and field team split up over the weekend to compete at both the LSU Tiger Relays in Baton Rouge and the Ty Terrel Relays in Beaumont, Texas. The Cajuns wrapped up a busy day Saturday with several top finishes including its second NCAA Regional mark of the spring.
Ragin' Cajuns senior Lawrence Willis opened his outdoor campaign right where he left off after earning All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships earlier this year. Willis captured the triple jump title at the Tiger Relays with an NCAA Regional mark of 53-09.75 in his first outdoor competition of the season.
The men's team had several other impressive individual marks at the Tiger Relays. Lawrence Leben finished fifth overall in the 110-meter hurdles to earn his second consecutive regional qualifying mark in a time of 14.30 seconds and Jon Erik Shanklin placed sixth overall in the men's 400-meter dash in 48.21 seconds.
In the field events Jeremy Hebert tied for third in the high jump with a height of 6-08.75 and Scott Lowry posted a career best height of 15-05.00 to finish sixth overall in the pole vault.
On the women's side senior distance runner Natalie Gillis added another school record to her list of accomplishments with a time of 4:36.65 to finish third in the 1,500-meter race.
Vaulters Andree Bonvillain and Amanda Caffey finished third and fourth in the pole vault with identical marks of 10-04.00.
Walter Whitfield captured the men's 3,000-meter title with a winning time of 8:53.78 to lead the team at the Ty Terrel Relays in Beaumont.
As a team the Cajuns had nine individuals place second in their respective events.
The UL Lafayette track and field team will next travel to Austin, Texas to compete in the Texas Relays on April 1-3.
