LAFAYETTE - Fresh off a second place finish at the Indoor Sun Belt Conference Track Championships, Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns will open up the 2004 outdoor season this Saturday at the UNO Invitational in New Orleans.
The Ragin' Cajuns will be without the services of triple jump standout Lawrence Willis who will be competing at the 2004 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships the same day in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The
Iota, La., native qualified for the Championships with
three automatic marks in the triple jump, most recently
a mark of 53-05.75 to win his third consecutive Sun Belt
triple jump title two weeks ago.
The Cajun senior was also named the Sun Belt Championship men's most outstanding field performer and top points earner after winning both the triple jump and long jump titles along with a sixth place finish in the high jump.
Willis currently holds the nation's fifth longest triple jump with a mark of 54-02.00 set at the LSU Twilight Invitational. Auburn senior Leevan Sands holds the nation's top triple jump mark entering the Championships with a distance of 55-10.25.
The triple jump championships are tentatively set to begin at 5:45 p.m. from the Randal Tyson Indoor Track Complex on Saturday, March 13. Results will be posted live at www.ncaasports.com.
