LAFAYETTE- University of Louisiana at Lafayette track and field triple jump standout Lawrence Willis received his third Sun Belt Performer of the Week award this season after improving on an NCAA automatic qualifying mark at the LSU Twilight Invitational.
Willis
finished first among current collegians and second
overall in the triple jump competition with a new
personal best triple jump mark of 54-02.00 which ranks
as the third longest jump all-time in the Sun Belt
Conference. The mark also tops his previous best of
53-11.25 at the 2003 Outdoor LSU Twilight and improves
on a mark that ranks fifth best in the nation.
In 2003 Willis earned All-American honors after finishing fourth at the NCAA Championships in the triple jump competition. He was also named 2003 All-Louisiana Field Athlete of the Year after winning the 2002 and 2003 Indoor and Outdoor Triple Jump Championships in the Sun Belt Conference.
The Iota, La., native will try for his third straight Sun Belt Conference indoor triple jump championship this Sunday at the 2004 Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
