Error Proves Costly In Cajuns Loss To Tulsa

MONROE – Tulsa's Brandi McGuire sent a blooper into right field with two outs in the bottom of the sixth that Louisiana-Lafayette right fielder Lauren Castle lost from her glove as she was charging to make the play, allowing two Golden Hurricane baserunners to score the go-ahead runs in a 2-0 win over the Ragin' Cajuns in the opening round of the ULM Mardi Gras Softball Classic Friday evening.

The loss was the first of the young season for the Ragin' Cajuns (2-1) and spoiled another solid outing by starting pitcher Brooke Mitchell (1-1) who went six innings and allowed two unearned runs while striking out 12 and walking just one. In two games so far this week Mitchell has tossed 11 innings and struck out 17 while walking just one.

Tulsa's Maren Genow (3-0) picked up the win, her third of the season, limiting the Cajuns offense to just a Becky McMurtry single in the gap in the top of the first inning. Genow struck out eight, allowed one hit and walked none. She got UL Lafayette cleanup hitter Tiffany Grayson to strike out to end the game – the third time Grayson struck out in the game.

Both teams were locked in a pitchers duel throughout the matchup. Tulsa (4-3) got two key hits in the sixth inning and had runners on the corners when Castle's miscue with two outs allowed the Golden Hurricane to keep the inning going and score the winning runs.

Junior Jill Robertson, who dislocated her left shoulder in Tuesday's game two against Louisiana Tech, was dressed out but did not see action. The Lafayette native is expected to be sidelined for the entire weekend

The Ragin' Cajuns will return to action Saturday at 11 a.m. against in-state foe Southeastern Louisiana (0-5) and will wrap up Pool B play at 1 p.m. against SEC-member Auburn (7-7). Auburn defeated SLU 3-2 in seven innings earlier Friday. Bracket play will begin at 3 p.m. with the teams being seeded based on their performance in pool play.
