Cajuns Notch First-Ever Victory Over Florida International, 58-48

LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns picked-up their
first win in school history over Florida International
with a 58-48 decision on Saturday night in Lafayette.
Excellent defense propelled UL Lafayette, 9-7 (3-2) to
the win. The Cajuns shot 45 percent while holding FIU,
8-10 (2-3), to 27 percent from the floor. The game marks
the sixth time this season that the Cajuns have held an
opponent to less than 50 points.
After holding FIU to only 18 point in the first half,
the Cajuns came out in
the second half and increased their nine-point lead to
13 points in less
than eight minutes.
The Golden Panthers cut their deficit to eight points in
a matter of
seconds. Deniz Boz hit a basket, then stripped the ball
from Morgan Mayon and dished to Milena Tomova who scored
and was fouled by Anna Petrakova. The free throw cut the
Cajuns lead to 40-32 with 10:37 remaining. The foul was
Petrakova's fourth.
Petrakova was called for her fifth foul 78 seconds later
and would exit with only six points, six rebounds and
three blocks. UL Lafayette led 45-34 at that point.
The Cajuns increased their lead to 52-40 with 6:49 to
play on a
three-pointer by Sharee Glenn.
FIU came back with an 8-0 run to close within 52-48 on a
three pointer by Tomova at the 3:30 mark.
Glenn stopped the run with a 10-foot jumper in the lane
to give the Cajuns a 54-48 lead with 2:50 to play.
Alexandra Kotta used two free throws to up the Cajuns'
lead to 56-48 with 1:03 remaining.
Glenn and Bernette Tolston each added a free throw in
the closing seconds to seal the victory for the Cajuns.
Glenn led the Cajuns with 18 points. Tolston and
Tiffany Washington each scored ten points. Each had two
steals and an assist, but Washington added a game-high
eight rebounds to Tolston's four. Ashley Blanche had
nine points and a game-high five assists.
Tomova accounted for nearly 44 percent of FIU's scoring,
leading all players with 21 points.
The Cajuns opened the game with a 7-3 spurt thanks to
baskets from Petrakova and Blanche and a pair of free
throws by Washington.
The Cajuns continued to increase their lead, 15-9, with
a pair from the line by Petrakova and six points by
Glenn.
FIU closed to within 16-14 on a pair of free throws by
Dace Cinite at the
7:05 mark.
UL Lafayette responded to the pressure with an 11-4 run
to close the half. Four more points from Glenn and
baskets by Washington and Tolston gave the Cajuns a
24-16 lead with three minutes remaining in the half.
As the shot clock expired Mayon hit a three-pointer with
24 seconds to play. Petrakova preserved the Cajuns 27-18
halftime lead by blocking Tomova's lay-up with two
seconds left on the clock.
