LAFAYETTE-Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns survived a second
half collapse to win their fourth straight game, topping
Texas-Pan American 62-54 on Sunday afternoon at Earl K.
Long Gym.
The Cajuns (7-5) held UTPA (7-9) to 16 first half
points, on 20 percent
shooting, en route to a 21-point halftime edge. UL
Lafayette shot 48.4
percent in the first half, but missed eight of their
first 10 shots to start
the second half.
The slow start allowed the Lady Broncs to cut the Cajuns
lead down to 12 points, 45-33, with 10:02 remaining in
the game. The visitors started to play aggressively at
both ends of the court, out rebounding the Cajuns 15-7
in the first ten minutes.
The Cajuns needed a boost, and it came from senior
Tiffany Washington. Playing with four fouls, Washington
scored six points and grabbed three rebounds over a
four-minute stretch to give the Cajuns a 54-40 lead with
3:45 remaining.
A basket by Molly Schamel and a three-pointer from
Ashley Roberts, her fifth, cut the Cajuns lead to single
digits, 54-45, with three minutes to play.
After a pair of free throws by Anna Petrakova, Amanda
Carlow hit three free throws over two possessions to
trim the Cajuns lead to eight points.
Petrakova came back with two more from the stripe with
53.1 seconds left, but MaHogany Daniel converted for
UTPA less than seven seconds later. Daniel hit two free
throws with 22.7 seconds left to cut the Cajuns lead
down to six, 58-52.
Ashley Blanche hit two free throws with 21.6 on the
clock to extend the
Cajuns lead back to eight. The visitors closed to
within six on a Schamel basket with five ticks
remaining, but two free throws by Sharee Glenn in the
waning seconds sealed the win for UL Lafayette.
Petrakova led the Cajuns with 27 points, 13 rebounds,
three assists, two
blocks and two steals. Washington added her third
double-double of the
season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Blanche and
Bernette Tolston each finished with nine points.
The Cajuns stormed out to a 9-0 lead in the first 3:24
of the contest behind five points from Petrakova and
four points from Blanche.
After three free throws by Jennifer Piwonka, Blanche
connected on a
three-pointer and Petrakova added a basket to give the
Cajuns a 14-3 lead. The Cajuns lead grew to 17-3
following a triple by Tolston.
With a 19-8 lead, the Cajuns erupted with a 13-5 run to
increase their lead to 32-13 with 3:51 left in the first
half. Washington contributed six
points, Petrakova four points and Tolston a
three-pointer.
An offensive rebound and put-back at the buzzer by
Petrakova gave the junior center her eight double-double
of the season and the Cajuns a 37-16 lead at the break.
