Templet Shuts Down FIU Bats to Even Series

LAFAYETTE - Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team defeats Florida International by a score of 4-0 here at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field to tie the three game Sun Belt series at one game each. UL Lafayette (16-25) improves to 7-7 in conference play, while FIU (29-13) falls to 7-4 and is now tied with South Alabama for first place in the conference standings.
Louisiana-Lafayette junior right-hander Jordy Templet held the Golden Panthers scoreless on eight hits for the complete game shutout. Templet (5-3) struck out nine and walked three to pick up his second conference victory in a row. The shutout was the first against FIU in conference play since the 1999 season.
Ragin' Cajuns third baseman Dallas Morris paced the offense by going two for three on the day with a run scored and one batted in. Corey Coles drove in two runs with a first inning double and Jason Wilson scored two runs with two hits on the afternoon.
The Cajuns struck early in the bottom half of the first inning against FIU starter Andrew Edwards. UL Lafayette started the inning with consecutive singles by Jason Wilson and Dallas Morris. Both Wilson and Morris came around to score when Corey Coles hit a double to center field to give the Cajuns a 2-0 lead.
Cajuns first baseman Phillip Hawke extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth inning with a one-out sacrifice fly that scored Corey Coles from third. The RBI was Hawke's team high 31st of the year.
UL Lafayette pushed across a final run in the sixth inning to go up 4-0. Jason Wilson singled and stole second with two outs in the inning before Dallas Morris drove him home with a single to right field.
Templet held the Panthers in check for the remainder of the game to even the series. The complete game was Templet's third of the season and his second shutout of the year. Edwards (0-3) suffered the loss for FIU after giving up two runs on five hits in four innings pitched.
UL Lafayette improves to 16-25 overall on the season and 7-7 in the Sun Belt. The series will conclude tomorrow with a deciding game three at 12 Noon.
