LAFAYETTELouisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team drops their tenth straight game of the season here at M.L "Tigue" Moore Field in a 7-6 loss to the University of Illinois-Chicago. The Cajuns held leads of 2-0 and 5-4 before falling behind late in the game. UL Lafayette falls to 5-17 overall and Illinois-Chicago improves to 2-6 on the year.

The Cajuns struck first in the opening inning to take the early lead. Corey Coles reached base after getting hit by a pitch and eventually scored when Cajun first baseman Sport Voorhies hit his first homerun of the year with two outs in the inning.

With UL Lafayette leading 2-0, Illinois-Chicago responded with a four run inning against UL Lafayette starter Andy Gros in the second inning. Flames designated hitter Weber Bowen led off the inning with a homerun to left field. UIC scored three more runs that inning on four hits and a Cajun fielding error.

UL Lafayette took the lead right back in the bottom half of the second inning after scoring three more runs off UIC starter David Haehnel to go up 5-4. Matt Levering opened the inning with a double to left field and scored on a Bryan Sneed RBI single for the first run of the inning. Third baseman Dallas Morris drove in Jason Wilson from second with a two-out single to tie the game. Junior second baseman Brad Saloom drove in the go ahead run in the inning on a double to left field scoring Bryan Sneed from third base.

Illinois-Chicago tied the game in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to center field scoring a runner from third base with one out. The Flames added one run in each the sixth and seventh inning to take a 7-5 after seven innings of play.

Haehnel lasted 4 2/3 innings for the Flames and gave up five runs on ten Cajun hits. Reliever Charlie Hahn came on in relief of Haehnel in the fifth inning.

Louisiana-Lafayette cut the deficit to just one run in the eighth inning after Ryan Core led off the inning with a single. Ray Dees came on to pinch run for Core and eventually scored from third base on ground ball out off the bat of Bryan Sneed with one out. Hahn induced shortstop Jordy Templet into a ground ball out to end the inning with the Flames up by one run.

The one-run UIC lead held up in the ninth inning, giving the Flames their second straight win here at Moore field this weekend.

Third baseman Nelson Gord went 2 for 3 on the day with 2 RBI to lead the UIC offense. Bryan Sneed led the Cajuns after going 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

Cajun starter Andy Gros (1-4) suffered the loss after throwing all nine innings. Gros allowed seven runs (four earned) on 14 hits, while striking out four batters and walking two.

UIC reliever Charlie Hahn (1-1) picked up the win after holding the Cajuns to just one run and three hits in the final 4 1/3 innings.

The Cajuns will try to avoid the series sweep here at M. L. “Tigue” Moore Field tomorrow at 1 p.m. Junior right-hander Jordy Templet (1-2, 2.51 ERA) is slated to get the start for UL Lafayette.
