LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team ends a ten game losing streak and defeats the Illinois-Chicago Flames 7-1 here at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field to take the final game of the series. Head Coach Tony Robichaux picks up win number 292 and becomes the all-time wins leader at UL Lafayette passing former Cajun skipper Mike Boulanger.
Cajun right-hander Jordy Templet received the start on the mound and didn't disappoint. Templet pitched a complete game against the Flames and allowed just one run on two hits along the way while striking out nine batters and walking just two.
Illinois-Chicago scored the only run off Templet in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead on a RBI double to center field by Flames catcher Kevin Nelson.
UL Lafayette got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning after Sport Voorhies was a hit by a pitch from UIC starter John Flood to open the inning. Voorhies eventually scored from third on a wild pitch by Flood to tie the game with one out in the inning.
The Cajuns added two more runs in the fifth inning when outfielder Corey Coles blasted his second homerun of the year into the pine trees in right field. Third baseman Matt Levering scored on the homer after walking to lead off the inning.
Templet shut down the Illinois-Chicago bats and retired 20 consecutive batters after giving up a two-out walk in the third inning.
Louisiana-Lafayette increased the lead to 7-1 with a four run eighth inning. Left fielder Bryan Sneed had a RBI single that scored Corey Coles from third with one out. First baseman Phillip Hawke drove in two more runs on a double to left field. Junior second baseman Brad Saloom scored the fourth run of the inning from second base on a single by third baseman Matt Levering.
UIC starter John Flood left the game with two outs in the eighth inning after allowing seven runs, all earned on eight Cajun hits. He walked three batters and stuck out two on the night. Ryan Hopkins pitched the final 1/3 of an inning for the Flames.
Junior Lafayette native Corey Coles led the Cajuns offensively in the win by going 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI. First baseman Phillip Hawke also drove in two runs and went 2 for 4 on the night.
Jordy Templet (2-2) picks up the win for UL Lafayette after tossing a gem of a game, while John Flood (0-1) suffers his first loss of the season for UIC.
The Cajuns will travel to McNeese State for a 7 pm game tomorrow night before opening Sun Belt conference play this weekend with a series in Bowling Green against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers
