Sullivan Silences Cajuns Bats

HOUSTON- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team continued a three-game series against the University of Houston Cougars by losing their second straight game in a 8-0 loss here at Cougar Field. UL Lafayette (5-9) could only manage two hits against 2002 Cougar consensus All-American pitcher Brad Sullivan (1-3).
UL Lafayette pitcher Austin Faught (1-2) struggled in the start against his former team. Faught lasted just 1 2/3 of an inning, giving up four runs on five hits with a walk and a strikeout.
The Cougars opened the scoring against Faught with three runs in the first inning. Cougar first baseman Thanos Papavasiliou drove in one run and second baseman Kevin Roberts drove in two more on a single through the right side of the Cajun infield to give Houston the early three run lead.
Houston added another run off Faught in the second inning before Kraig Schambough came on in relief. The Cougars added one run off Schambough in each of the next two innings to take a 6-0 lead.
Houston added another run off Cajun reliever Thad Montgomery in the fifth inning to go up 7-0. The cougars added an unearned run in the eighth inning off Dan Reed for the final score.
Cougar starter Brad Sullivan held the Cajuns to just two hits through eight innings before being replaced by Bryan Harris in the ninth inning. Sullivan struck out 11 Cajuns and walked only two batters in eight complete innings.
Houston first baseman Thanos Papavasiliou went 4 for 4 on the day with 3 RBI to lead his team.
UL Lafayette drops to 5-9 on the year and will try to avoid the three game sweep Sunday at 1 p.m. here at Cougar Field.
