Selected Sun Belt Player of the Week
Monday, Feb. 3, 2003
LAFAYETTE – Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns men's basketball junior guard Laurie Bridges picked up the Cajuns' second Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Award of the season on Monday when the league office announced him as its top player for this week.
Bridges
averaged 15.5 points last week as the Cajuns picked up two
key road wins at Denver and North Texas. With those two wins
the Cajuns moved three games ahead of the rest of the Sun
Belt West Division in the loss column and hold a two-game
lead over New Orleans and South Alabama, both 5-4 in the
SBC, for the division lead.
The New Orleans native ended the week shooting 56 percent from the field and 91 percent from the free throw line. He also averaged 6.5 rebounds for the week.
Bridges scored a game-high 20 points against Denver on Saturday on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and a 7-for-7 performance at the free throw line. He ended the week 9-of-16 from the floor and 10-of-11 at the charity stripe.
Bridges made three free throws and a three-pointer in a key 6-0 run that gave the Cajuns a 26-22 lead at Denver Saturday, after Denver had taken a 22-20 lead in the first half. Against North Texas he hit a three-point basket on the ensuing possession to put the Cajuns back on top by double figures after NT had closed to within eight at 30-22.
Bridges and his Cajuns teammates will put their 17-game, Cajundome-record winning streak on the line Thursday, Feb. 6 when they host SBC West and I-10 rival South Alabama at 7:05 p.m. in the Cajundome. The game marks the beginning of a three-game homestand which runs over six days. Louisiana-Lafayette hosts UNO Saturday, Feb. 8 and concludes the homestand Tuesday, Feb. 11 with Denver, both games having 7:05 p.m. start times.
