LAFAYETTE- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team was able to combine good pitching with good hitting and snap a six game losing streak by defeating the Southeastern Louisiana Lions 10-0 in the second game of a five game homestand at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
Junior right-handed pitcher Jordy Templet (1-1, 0.98 ERA) got the start on the mound for the Cajuns and made the most of it by throwing nine complete innings, allowing no runs and only two SLU hits. Templet struck out a career high 12 batters, the second straight night that a Cajun starter set a career high for strikeouts.
UL Lafayette broke out of an offensive slump in the first inning by scoring two early runs off SLU starter Brad Miller. With the bases loaded Rhett Buras singled to score Landry from third and Coles from second. Miller forced Dallas Morris to ground out with the bases loaded to end the scoring with UL Lafayette up 2-0.
The Cajun bats struck again in the third inning when Corey Coles leadoff with a triple down the right field line. Coles scored his second run of the night on a wild pitch from Miller. Brad Saloom followed with a single and scored on a Matt Levering double to center field to give the Cajuns a 4-0 lead.
Lion starter Brad Miller (0-2) lasted only three full innings. The Ragin' Cajuns added two more runs off SLU reliever Chad Pendarvis on RBI singles by Corey Coles and Phillip Hawke.
UL Lafayette added another run in the sixth inning on a RBI ground out by Phillip Hawke to score Josh Landry from third off Lion reliever Beau Fontenot.
The Cajuns added three more runs in the eighth inning off reliever Brad Pitarro to make the final score 10-0. Josh Landry drove in two runs on a triple to right field and scored on a passed ball. Landry finished the night 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI.
UL Lafayette sophomore first baseman Phillip Hawke extended his season hitting streak to eight games after going 1 for 4 with 2 RBI on the night. Junior Corey Coles went 4 for 5 on the night with an RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored to lead the Cajuns offensively.
Southeastern La. transfer Rhett Buras picked up 2 RBI against his former team and went 1 for 3 on the night.
Jordy Templet picked up his first win of the season and now has a 0.98 ERA in 18.1 innings pitched. It was Templet's first win since April 9, 2002, a 6-3 victory against McNeese State. Miller suffers his second loss of the season for SLU.
UL Lafayette snaps a six game skid and improves to 3-6 on the year. Head coach Tony Robichaux picks up his 289th victory as a Cajun and is now just three wins shy of becoming the all-time leader in wins as a Cajuns coach. Robichaux has a chance to break the record this coming weekend at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field.
The Cajuns will finish up the homestand with a three-game series starting this Friday night at 6:35 p.m. against Troy State. Friday and Sunday's games will be televised live on Channel 17 (KLAF).
