DENVER – Nine different players tallied at least one point including a hat trick from freshman Lleane Grimditch as Denver posted a 7-0 victory over Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team here Sunday afternoon at Pioneer Field in Sun Belt Conference action.

The loss dropped the Cajuns to 6-10-1 overall and 2-4 in Sun Belt play. The match marked the final regular season road contest for UL Lafayette.

Denver concluded its regular-season home schedule and improved its record to 14-2 overall and 6-1 in Sun Belt play. With the win the Pioneers remained on top of the Sun Belt standings heading into the final week of play.

UL Lafayette did manage four shots on goal, one hitting the crossbar, but DU goalkeeper Danielle Wiley made the save each time to preserve the clean sheet.

The two teams opened the first half evenly matched for the first 18-plus minutes. The Pioneers struck first, for the first of four first-half goals, when Jamie Dierberger headed in a pass from Jamie Norwood at 18:46 for a 1-0 lead.

Denver would add three more goals before halftime. Leah Becherer recorded her first goal of the season at 34:30 and Grimditch tallied two of her three goals to create a 4-0 lead at the break.

“Down four goals at the break is a pretty sizable margin to come back from,” said UL Lafayette coach Dave Poggi. “At the half I told them to come back out and play with a little bit of pride and try to correct some of the mistakes from the first half.

"We played better in the second half,” Poggi added. "We hit the crossbar and the keeper had to make another save to preserve their clean sheet."

DU added three scores in the first 19 minutes of the second half, capped off by Grimditch's third goal, to end up with the final margin.

The seven goals were the most allowed by the Cajuns in a Sun Belt match and the margin of defeat was the worst since losing to Texas State-San Marcos (then-Southwest Texas State) 9-0 on Sept. 22, 2000.

The Pioneers out-shot the Cajuns 26-6 and had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Wiley made four saves to record her eighth shutout of the year. UL Lafayette's Anna Brannon made three saves and faced 10 shots.

Louisiana-Lafayette will conclude the 2003 regular season next weekend hosting Western Kentucky on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m., and Middle Tennessee Sunday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. at Cajun Field.
