DENTON, Texas – Marilyn Marin scored two goals guiding host-North Texas to a 3-1 victory over Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns women's soccer team here Friday night at the Mean Green Soccer Complex.

The Mean Green (11-5-1, 4-1-1 Sun Belt) built a 2-0 advantage 22 minutes into the match to put the Cajuns (6-9-1, 2-3 Sun Belt) in a hole early on.

Marin, the Sun Belt's second-leading scorer with 14 goals entering the match, got NT on the board first when she gained possession of a miscleared ball by the UL Lafayette defense and fired a shot that bounced off the crossbar and fell into the goal for a 1-0 lead at 18:35.

The Mean Green's offensive pressure produced the second goal of the night. Louisiana-Lafayette, backed deep in its own territory, lost one of its marks and Kristen Campbell found herself wide open and hit paydirt at 22:26 to push the advantage to two goals.

“When you hit a two-goal hole early it is tough to comeback,” said UL Lafayette coach Dave Poggi. “Playing against the two premier attacking players in the conference, (Marilyn) Marin and (Melinda) Pina, adds to the difficulty and it's impossible for anyone no matter whether you're a freshman or senior-laden squad.

““Those are two of the best attacking players we've seen all year long,” Poggi added. ”Tonight they were on their game and it made it difficult for us to get any consistent attack.”

Marin's second goal of the evening all but assured the Mean Green of the outcome and gave NT a 3-0 lead at the 55:19 mark.

UL Lafayette would not be denied a score, though, as Sherryl Owens headed home a free kick from Lindsay Webb at 75:31.

The goal was the second of Owens' career and first this season. It was her first tally since scoring a goal in the Cajuns 4-0 win over Nicholls State Sept. 24, 2002.

“Being able to score a goal, after falling behind by three scores, shows character and the determination we had tonight,” Poggi said. “We had one or two more chances to score after that goal but the keeper just made some great saves.”

North Texas kept the action in UL Lafayette's end of the field most of the night, attacking with 35 shots to the Cajuns' seven. The Mean Green also had an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.

Mean Green goalkeeper Briana Buchanan came up with two saves in the match while UL Lafayette's Anna Brannon finished with eight saves.
