HOUSTON – For the second straight day Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team was competitive with the opposition in the statistical categories, but errors did them in as the Cajuns dropped a pair of straight set decisions to Houston and Texas Christian here Saturday at the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational.
In the first match of the afternoon, the Cajuns had more kills (44-38), more assists (42-35), and outdug UH (59-50), but it was UL Lafayette's attack and reception errors that would ultimately make the difference.
UH (6-0) took advantage of those errors and coupled that with 14 services aces to post the 3-0 (30-22, 30-25, 30-28) win over the Cajuns (4-2). Jenny Tanneberger led all Cougars with a double-double (15 kills, 12 digs) and Jane Anne Karasek added 11 kills to pace the UH offense.
UL Lafayette sophomore outside hitter Stacey Cole led the Cajuns offense in kills for the fifth time this season as she posted 15 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Lesley Tough led all Cajuns with 14 digs.
Once again the Cajuns struggled with attack percentages. UL Lafayette was held to a -.049 clip in the first game, committing 12 errors while collecting only 10 kills. Priscilla Lima led the Cajuns with a team-best .229 attack percentage.
In the afternoon's second match, errors once again doomed the Cajuns (4-3) cause. UL Lafayette had more kills and more digs, but 25 attack errors combined with eight service errors cost them against TCU (5-2).
The Horned Frogs posted a 3-0 (30-22, 30-24, 30-28) win over the Cajuns in the tournament finale for both squads.
The Cajuns had three players with a double-double and posted a weekend-high .201 attack percentage. TCU countered with a .323 attack percentage to slip past the Cajuns in a match where the score was no where indicative of the final 3-0 result.
Tough had another excellent outing, leading Louisiana-Lafayette with 16 kills while adding 12 digs. Cole bounced back from her attack percentage struggles in the tournament's first two matches with a team-best, and season-high, .565 clip.
UL Lafayette will return to action next Friday at the Texas A&M Verizon Invitational Sept. 13-14.
