Cajuns Suffer First Loss of the Season Friday

HOUSTON – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team suffered its first setback of the season here Friday at the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational as the host Owls took a 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-24) decision in the tournament's opening round.

The loss ended a four-match winning streak for the Cajuns (4-1) and marked the first time that UL Lafayette was swept in straight sets since a similar setback to New Mexico State Nov. 11, 2001.

Kristina Hoban led all Owls with 10 kills and the size advantage paid off for Rice as they collected 10.5 blocks on the evening.

The Cajuns were paced offensively by sophomore outside hitter Stacey Cole who collected 13 kills. Priscilla Lima chipped in 12 kills and fought hard in the trenches, pulling out a team-best 23 digs.

UL Lafayette was plagued by a .087 match attack percentage. The Cajuns were unable to counter the Owls .298 clip and unforced errors took its toll. The Cajuns had 34 attack errors to just 11 for the Owls.

Tournament action continues Saturday as the Cajuns face Houston (5-0) at noon which will be followed by a 4 p.m. match against Texas Christian (4-1). UH downed TCU in straight sets in Friday's early action.
