TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns volleyball team closed out a series of four straight in-season tournaments here Saturday morning at the Florida State Invitational in the Lucy McDaniel Arena at Tully Gymnasium.
The result, though, was not what the Cajuns would have like to have seen. Powered by a dominating hitting performance, Louisiana State (7-3) scored a 3-1 (30-22, 30-28, 30-32, 30-17) win over the Cajuns (6-7) in the tournament finale for both squads.
The Tigers jumped out to quick 2-0 lead in the match after squeaking out a 30-28 win in game two. UL Lafayette would stave off elimination with a 32-30 win in the third game. The Cajuns used a fierce rally to push a fourth game.
Trailing 29-23, Louisiana-Lafayette hung tough and fought off five game-points and scored six straight to even the score at 29-29. LSU would break the Cajuns run, but not to be denied UL Lafayette tied the score and pushed across two more scores to stay alive in the match.
The Tigers dominated the final game of the match, rolling to a 30-17 win. LSU broke open a 2-2 tie with an 8-4 run. After that came a 10-5 Tigers run that gave LSU a nine-point advantage and they never looked back.
Sophomore outside hitter Stacey Cole led all Cajuns with 18 kills, leading all Cajuns in kills for the third time this weekend. She had double-digit kills in each match over the weekend and has posted double-digit kills in all but one match this season.
Senior Priscilla Lima, who collected her 1,000th career dig in the match, posted a double-double (15 kills, 11 digs). It was her second dig of the match that got her to the 1,000 mark in digs. On Friday, Lima collected her 1,000th career kill. The double-double was the fifth in the last six matches for Lima and her team-best eighth.
Junior setter Beth Henson led UL Lafayette with 13 digs to go along with 47 assists. The Cajuns placed three players in double-digit kills.
LSU took advantage of 30 Cajuns attack errors, nine service errors and seven reception errors. The Tigers also ended the match with a blistering .352 attack percentage. Freshman Cara Causey led the Tigers with 17 kills.
UL Lafayette will now turn its attention to Sun Belt Conference action which begins Friday in a 7 p.m. match at defending SBC East Division champions Western Kentucky in Bowling Green, Ky.
