LAFAYETTE -- Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun basketball team has announced Orien Greene has transferred to the program after a two-year stint at Florida.
The 6-4, 200-pound guard started 30 games as a sophomore for the Gators in 2001-02. Greene, a native of Gainesville, Fla., averaged 5.2 points per game, 2.8 assists and a team-best 61 steals. He also made 20 3-pointers on 66 attempts (30.3 percent) while playing nearly 24 minutes per contest.
He saw action in every Florida game during his two-year stay. However, the 2000 "Mr. Basketball" in the state of Florida felt it was time for a change.
"I enjoyed my days at Florida," said Greene, whose 1.97 steals per game tally last year was the fourth best in program history. "I learned a lot, but I just thought it was time for me to move on. I came on a visit (to UL Lafayette) and I just felt very comfortable. It felt like a family, and they already have a good team already."
Greene's best game as a Gator came against another Louisiana school. This past season, he recorded his first career double-double in the Gators' Jan. 16 win over LSU. He had 14 points and 11 assists -- both career-highs.
As per NCAA rules, Greene must sit out the 2002-03 season. He will be eligible as a junior in 2003-04.
"I feel like I am a team player, and my game is to get everyone else involved. I think they have a lot of good players that will help make me a better player, and I can't wait to get out on the floor with them."
