ASU RALLIES TO BEAT CAJUNS...May 19, 2002

LAFAYETTE – Arkansas State second baseman Nate Olson tallied four hits, and Lane Stafford added a big three-run double to lead the Indians (22-33, 8-14 Sun Belt Conference) to a 9-6 win over Louisiana-Lafayette (37-19, 17-7 SBC) Sunday at "Tigue" Moore Field.

Stafford, batting in the nine-hole, came through with the bases loaded double in the sixth inning off Cajun reliever Lloyd Ellis (0-1). The hit erased a 6-4 Cajun lead, and made a winner of reliever Ryan Hamilton (1-2). Brad Thomas earned his sixth save.

Charles Redmond went 3-for-3 with a run scored to lead UL Lafayette. Justin Bourque added a three-run double, and Chase Lambin added his team-best 13th home run of the season. The Cajuns used five pitchers on the day and walked 13 batters.

ASU stranded 18 runners on the day in a game that lasted nearly four hours. The two teams combined for 20 walks and 28 left on base.

The Indians jumped ahead with two runs in the first before UL Lafayette responded with four of its own in the bottom half. However, ASU chased Cajun starter Kraig Schambough in the second another run and added one more off senior Brandt Ray.

The two teams will play again in first-round action of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament. The Cajuns will be the No. 2 seed while the Indians will be the seventh seed. South Alabama, the 2002 SBC regular season champs, will be the top seed. The tournament will take place in Mobile, Ala.
