CAJUNS DROP ANOTHER MID-WEEKER AT SOUTHERN...April 23, 2002

?BATON ROUGE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team had some quiet bats in the first six innings, but Southern's sticks were anything but as the Jaguars rolled to a 9-4 win Tuesday night at Lee-Hines Field.

?Southern All-American candidate Rickey Weeks had another dazzling performance, going 2-for-5 with four RBIs as the Jaguars (35-7) avenged last month's 10-1 loss against UL Lafayette (27-15).

?Weeks had a three-run homer and added a run-scoring triple – his 12th of the season – to send the Jaguars to their 28th win in their last 31 outings. Richard Primus went 3-for-3 and added a solo home run as the duo led a 16-hit SU attack.

?Dewon Day (1-0) got the win after hurling four strong innings while striking out five. The Jaguars used four pitchers on the night and combined to strike out 11.

?Cajun right-hander Brandt Ray (2-2) took the loss after giving up three runs in three innings of work. It was a tough night all around for the Cajun hurlers. SU scored in six of their eight at-bats.

?The Cajuns, though, had all kinds of trouble offensively through the game's first six frames. UL Lafayette had only one hit in the first five innings and did not mount a serious threat until the seventh.

?Down 6-0, the visitors finally got on the board when left fielder Bryan Sneed -- who did not start -- hit his seventh home run of the season. The junior hit a two-run shot that plated Jason Wilson, who led off the frame with a walk.

?The Cajuns cut the lead in half three batters later on an RBI groundout by Chase Lambin. With a runner on third and two outs, UL Lafayette had a chance to cut the margin even more when Kevin Preau lined a ball up the middle.

?But Weeks, who has struggled mightily at second base this year, made a diving stab and threw out Preau to end the threat. Weeks then put the game out of reach in the eighth with a three-run homer -- his 12th of the season – off reliever Lloyd Ellis.

?Cajun second baseman Brad Saloom hit a solo home run in the ninth to end the scoring. Lambin led the Cajuns' eight-hit attack thanks to a 3-for-5 night.

?UL Lafayette, which lost its third straight mid-week game, will get back into Sun Belt Conference play this weekend with a three-game set at Middle Tennessee. The series starts with a 7 p.m. Friday tilt at Reese Smith Field.
