CAJUNS HOLD ON TO EDGE UNO March 23, 2002

?LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajun baseball team jumped out to an early lead and held on late to beat visiting New Orleans 6-5 Saturday afternoon in Sun Belt Conference action at "Tigue" Moore Field.

?Jason Wilson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Corey Coles also added two hits to lead the Cajuns (16-8, 2-0 SBC) to their fourth straight win. Left-hander Donnie Bair (1-1) picked up his first Division I win on the mound, while freshman right-hander Kevin Ardoin picked up the save.

?Donnie Bollich, Justin LoFranco and R.J. Elbin each had two hits for the Privateers (13-9, 0-2 SBC) who lost their second straight after having a seven-game win streak snapped Friday. Left-hander Jeff Stander (2-1) tallied the loss after giving up seven hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings.

?After UNO scored a run in the third, the Cajuns came back with six unanswered runs during the next three frames.

?With the game tied at 1-1 in the fourth, Louisiana-Lafayette erupted for three runs on a two-out rally to jump in front. Wilson, Coles and Brad Saloom each provided run-scoring singles.

?Down 6-1 in the sixth, the Privateers scored two runs to cut the margin to three and got it to 6-5 in the eighth on back-to-back RBI doubles by pinch hitters Drew Pizza and Chris Adams.

?But Ardoin stranded the tying run on second by getting Mark Monaghan to pop out. After easily sitting down the first two Privateers in the ninth, Brad Domreis laced a single to left, but Ardoin ended it by getting LoFranco to fly out to center.

?The two teams combined for 23 hits (UNO 12, Cajuns 11) but also combined to leave 19 runners on base (UNO 10). The series will conclude with a 1 p.m. contest Sunday.
