BASEBALL TILTS WITH SEVENTH-RANKEDWICHITASTATE
Ragin' Cajuns continue stretch of eight straight games against Top 10 teams
WICHITA,Kan.Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns baseball team continues its tour of the Top 10 teams in the country when they face No. 7 Wichita State Friday at7 p.m.
Louisiana-Lafayette (12-6) continues a stretch of eight games against teams that are ranked in the Top 10 of at least one poll.
The Cajuns are coming off of a thrilling 2-1 win over eighth-ranked and Interstate 10-rivalLouisianaStateon Tuesday. Justin Gabriel went the distance, striking out eight, and the Cajuns got a game-winning hit from Jason Wilson in the ninth as the Cajuns halted a three-game losing streak.
Junior Andy Gros (2-1, 1.91 ERA, 33 IP) will make his second start of the season in game one of the three-game series. Gros' last start came Tuesday, March 5, against Southern. He went six innings allowing one run on six hits and striking out eight.
At the plate Louisiana-Lafayette is paced by sophomore Corey Coles. The Comeaux high product leads the team with a .403 batting average and .582 slugging percentage.
The Cajuns will be searching for their first-ever win in Wichita. The last time UL Lafayette played at Eck Stadium was April 18-19, 2000. The Shockers handed the Cajuns a pair of shutout defeats (6-0 and 4-0).
Last season WSU (8-1) visited Moore Field for the Mardi Gras Ball. The two teams met Feb. 23, 2001, with UL Lafayette posting a 1-0 win, their first over the Shockers. Tim Ramon tossed a complete game shutout, the first time in 333 games that WSU had not scored at least one run.
The Shockers are led by a quintet of players batting .400 or above. Don Rogers leads the way with a .571 clip followed by Brian Burgamy (.447), Mark Johnson (.429), Justin McCarty (.412) and Drew Moffitt (.412).
UL Lafayette has set its rotation for the weekend. Donnie Bair (0-0, 5.40 ERA, 5 IP) will start Saturday and Gabriel (3-1, 2.13 ERA, 42.1 IP) closes things out on Sunday.
Game time for Saturday is set for 2 p.m., while Sunday's game begins at noon.
The Cajuns next home game is scheduled for Tuesday, March 19 at 6:30 p.m.against LSU. The game is sold out, but is being telecast by Jumbo Sports Network.
