Laurie Bridges scored a career-high 18 points and Michael Southall and Brad Boyd each scored 16 to lead the Cajuns who recorded the largest margin of victory ever at the Cajundome, surpassing the 57-point victory over Baptist Christian Nov. 25, 1995 (121-64).
Louisiana-Lafayette extended its homecourt winning streak to 12 games, which ties the all-time school record set during the 1971-72 and 1972-73 season.
The win also snapped a two-game losing streak for the Cajuns and was their sixth straight home-opening win. UL Lafayette is a perfect 6-0 in home openers under head coach Jessie Evans. It was the Cajuns 16th straight win over Louisiana College.
The 116 points were the most scored in the Evans era and the most since Louisiana-Lafayette scored 128 against Grambling on Dec. 1, 1990 in the Louisiana Classics at the Cajundome.
UL Lafayette shot 54.3 percent for the game (44-of-81) marking the second straight game in which the Cajuns have shot above 50 percent. The Cajuns outrebounded an outmanned Louisiana College 52-20, including 25-5 on the offensive glass. The Cajuns forced the Wildcats into 29 turnovers.
Southall, making his first appearance of the 2002-03 regular season, entered the game with 14:26 remaining in the first half. His first two points of the regular season came at 13:37 on a slam dunk off an offensive rebound that give the Cajuns a 25-6 lead.
It may have taken the Cajuns a couple of minutes to get untracked, but once they did the points came rolling in bunches. UL Lafayette used a 16-0 run to erase an early 2-0 deficit. An Immanuel Washington layup at 17:50 off a Kenneth Lawrence feed pass got the Cajuns jump started.
The Wildcats never threatened from that point on and the lead continued to grow as the half went along, reaching as much as 41 points. UL Lafayette went into the locker room with a 64-24 advantage.
UL Lafayette outscored the Wildcats 53-33 in the second frame and saw its lead grow to as many 64.
The Cajuns will continue their current three-game homestand next Monday, Dec. 16 at 7:05 p.m. in the Cajundome against Alcorn State.
