Cajuns take win over Southeastern

LAFAYETTE, LA - Louisiana-Lafayette's Ragin' Cajuns women's basketball team was able to overcome its first-half shooting woes and a late surge on Wednesday afternoon at the Cajundome in taking a 48-45 win over Southeastern Louisiana.
Senior guard Charlotte Green led the Cajuns with 17 points. Sarah Richey posted a double-double scoring 16 points and pulling down 14 rebounds. The senior combo combined to score 33 of the Cajun 48 points. SLU was led by Pam Mathews' 16 points
The Cajuns rebounded from a 24 percent shooting performance in the game's opening frame with a 37 percent clip in the second half to maintain its three-point advantage from halftime. Both teams struggled early, as the Lady Lions shot just 23 percent in the first half.
UL Lafayette used a 10-2 run in the early stages of the second half to turn a 22-21 lead into a nine-point advantage at 32-23 with 9:54 remaining in the game.
The game went back-and-forth from there with the Cajuns maintaining a six-to-seven point margin.
After the Cajuns took a 46-38 lead on a Tammie White free throw with 1:02 left to play, the Lady Lions made their final push with a 5-0 run on baskets by Tish Guy and Velicity Burkhalter to cut the lead to 46-43 with 38 seconds remaining in the game.
Richey would make two crucial free throws on the next Cajuns possession to stretch the lead out to five at 48-43. SLU made an attempt at a last second rally, but fell short. Shontae Bethel kocked down a jumper with two seconds left to provide the final margin.
UL Lafayette finished the game 17-of-56 from the field (30.4 percent) while the Lady Lions ended the game 19-of-64 (29.7 percent). The two teams were dead even on the boards with 45 apiece.
The Cajuns jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the game?s first two minutes on layups from Richey and Sharee Glenn.
SLU would follow with an 8-0 run over the next three minutes to take an 8-4 lead, the largest lead by either team in the first half. The Lions got on the board at 17:44 with a jumper by Bethel. Bethel's second field goal of the game gave SLU the 8-4 lead and completed their run.
UL Lafayette ended its three-minute scoring drought with a Green three-pointer with 15:23 remaining in the first half. The Cajuns regained the lead at 13:53 on a pair of free throws by Anna Petrakova.
The Lady Lions regained the lead, 11-9, on a Shanna Accord three-point basket at 12:54.
A Richey basket and free throw at 10:25 gave UL Lafayette the lead once more at 12-11 lead. SLU regained the lead at 17-16 on a Mathews layup. Two Petrakova free throws at 2:06 gave the Cajuns a 18-17 lead. UL Lafayette went into the locker room with a 20-17 lead, one they wouldn't relinquish.
Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half. SLU was 8-of-35 (22.9 percent) while the Cajuns shot 7-for-29 (24.1 percent). The Lady Lions were able to keep the game close by outrebounding the Cajuns 29-20 including 13-6 on the offensive glass.
