Louisiana-Lafayette could not stop the quarterback Andrico Hines en route to a 48-35 loss at Middle Tennessee. Hines rushed for 75 yards and three touchdowns, while passing for 347 yards and one touchdown.
The Cajuns fall to 1-6 (0-2), while the Blue Raiders improve to 2-5 (1-1).
Jon Van Cleave had a fabulous game for the Cajuns, throwing for 396 yards and two touchdowns, but a 21-point third quarter by Hines spelled doom for UL Lafayette.
The Blue Raiders extended their lead to nine, 24-15, just a few minutes into the third quarter. Hines scored his second rushing touchdown with a 27-yard keeper up the middle.
An all-Van Cleave approach helped the Cajuns answer with an 80-play scoring drive. Van Cleave completed six passes and added an eleven-yard scramble to account for all of the Cajuns offense. His 15-yard touchdown toss to tight end Josh Joerg completed the drive and brought the Cajuns closer. UL Lafayette trailed by a slim 24-22 margin.
Middle Tennessee answered right back. The Cajuns defense could not solve the running or passing of Hines. The junior quarterback led the Blue Raiders on a 10-play, 69-yard drive in 4:58. He scored his third touchdown of the game to put MT ahead 31-22.
MT extended their lead, going 74 yards in 69 seconds. The Blue Raiders touchdown coming courtesy of a 53-yard pass from Hines to Kerry Wright. The extra point gave MT a 38-22 lead that would not be jeopardized.
The game started with a scoring flurry by Middle Tennessee.
The Blue Raiders needed just two plays and 36 seconds to score on their second possession. Hines hit Tyrone Calico on a 51-yard pass down to the Cajuns 18-yard line. Reshard Lee rushed off right tackle 18 yards into the end zone giving Middle Tennessee a 7-0 lead.
The next possession for MT let to Hines and Calico connecting again. The 45-yard passing play put the Blue Raiders at the Cajuns 15-yard line. Hines keeper from three yards away extended MT?s lead to 14-0. The hosts needed only 1:35 to travel 60 yards to pay dirt.
The Cajuns were driving late in the first quarter until Muhammed Rashada intercepted Van Cleave at the MT nine-yard line. The Cajuns earned a safety on the ensuing possession after Hicks fell on a Hines fumble in the end zone.
The Cajuns inched closer with a one-yard touchdown run by Blake Bourque. A big 41-yard pass from Van Cleave to Andre George keyed the 68-yard scoring drive. Sean Comiskey?s extra point placed the score at 14-9.
The momentum continued in the Cajuns favor. On fourth-and-two at the MT 22-yard line, head coach Rickey Bustle elected to bypass a field goal opportunity and go for it. Van Cleave overthrew an open Dwight Lindon in the end zone, but the Cajuns got the ball back on the next play. Charles Tillman recovered a Calico fumble and the Cajuns offense was back in business.
The Cajuns drove down to the Blue Raiders goal line before Van Cleave was intercepted in the end zone. A roughing the passer call on Devarick Scandrett negated the turnover and gave the Cajuns another second chance. Coleman entered the end zone for the fifth time this season to give the Cajuns their first lead. Coleman dropped Van Cleave?s screen pass on the attempted two-point conversion to keep the score 15-14 in favor of Louisiana-Lafayette.
Middle Tennessee sustained a drive late in half that stalled at the Cajuns 23-yard line. Brian Kelly hit a 40-yard field goal with 23 seconds remaining to reclaim the lead for the Blue Raiders.
Fred Stamps collected his fifth touchdown on a 27-yard strike from Van Cleave. The score came 34 seconds after Dwone Hicks? touchdown game MT a 45-22 lead. Stamps caught nine passes for 134 yards, while George grabbed eight balls for 148 yards.
Coleman added his sixth touchdown of the season on a one-yard run with 2:11 remaining in the game.
