The nation?s worst scoring offense had no problems putting points on the board Saturday afternoon. North Texas used a controlled ground attack and solid defense en route to a 27-0 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette.
Two third quarter touchdowns sealed the win for NT. Kevin Galbreath and Ja?Mel Branch each scored their second touchdown of the game to put the Mean Green up 27-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
Andrew Smith completed a 61-yard pass to George Marshall on the third play of the third quarter to set-up Galbreath?s second touchdown.
North Texas followed with a 61-yard drive, helping Branch collect his second touchdown. The series was keyed by a 22-yard run by Patrick Cobbs on third-and-18.
The Cajuns could not break the Mean Green defense for the second consecutive game at home. NT shutout UL Lafayette at Cajun Field during their last trip on Oct. 28, 2000.
UL Lafayette?s best scoring chance came on a 50-yard pass by Jon Van Cleave to Bill Sampy. The Cajuns penetrated the NT red zone for the first time, but lost the ball inside the five-yard line after Van Cleave fumbled the snap.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Mean Green sustained two scoring drives in the second frame.
The Mean Green marched 45 yards into the end zone to open the quarter. The nine play drive culminated in a two-yard touchdown run by Branch with 12:23 remaining in the first half. North Texas tried unsuccessfully three times from first-and-goal at the two-yard line, but Branch?s fourth down plunge was enough for a 6-0 NT lead. The Cajuns Charles Tillman blocked the extra point attempt by Nick Bazaldua.
The Cajuns three-and-out led to another scoring drive by North Texas. A 39-yard pass from Smith to Michael Hickmon gave NT another first-and-goal situation. Galbreath hit paydirt on third down to extend the Mean Green lead to 13-0.
