SOUTHALL NAMED SBC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jan. 28, 2002
LAFAYETTE - It hasn't taken Louisiana-Lafayette freshman center
Michael Southall long to make an impact on the Sun Belt Conference.
The 6-11 rookie was honored Monday as the league's Player of the Week. It is the second time this year the West Salem, Wis., product has taken the award. Southall and North Texas standout Chris Davis are now the only players in the league who have won the weekly award twice this year.
For Southall, it was certainly a well-deserved recognition. He helped vault the Cajuns (11-7, 5-2 SBC West) into first place in the SBC West Division by averaging 22.5 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks during the last two games.
In the Cajuns' 96-78 win over North Texas Thursday, Southall had season-bests of 26 points and 16 rebounds. He also added eight blocked shots, which set a school record. In the squad's 70-58 win over Denver Saturday, Southall came back with 19 points, 12 rebounds and six swats.
Southall now has four double-doubles this year. The Cajuns, who have won three straight contests, will head to South Alabama Thursday for a 7:05 p.m. conference tilt at the Mitchell Center.

In other Cajun basketball news, the Louisiana-Lafayette Department of Athletics want to remind fans that the Cajuns' game at New Orleans is set for 7:05 p.m. next Monday at the UNO Lakefront Arena.
The game was originally scheduled for this Saturday. However, because the Super Bowl was pushed back a week, the Cajun contest was moved back two days.
