UALR RALLIES FOR ONE-RUN VICTORY OVER CAJUNS...May 6, 2001

LAFAYETTE – Louisiana's Ragin' Cajuns were in position to help clarify the jumbled Sun Belt Conference race for positioning in the conference tournament on Sunday.

However, Arkansas-Little Rock scored single runs in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings to rally from an early two-run deficit and take a 6-5 victory away from Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday afternoon at M.L. "Tigue" Moore Field, ruining Senior Day festivities for nine Cajun seniors.

"We played poorly enough to let it get away," said Cajun head coach Tony Robichaux, whose team dropped its eighth one-run conference loss of the season. "We score up through the fourth inning and, after that, we don't score another run. We had some base-running mistakes along the way. When you add that to the fact that they really didn't deserve some of the runs they scored, you walk away a one-run loser."

The Cajuns (27-25, 11-13 Sun Belt Conference) jumped to a first inning lead via the home run for the second straight game. This time, it was senior outfielder Bret Bailey's turn, launching a solo shot over the left-field wall for his first career home run.

Arkansas-Little Rock (24-20, 11-13) though responded with a run in their half of the inning, scoring without use of a hit. UALR took advantage of a pair of walks from Louisiana-Lafayette starter Corey Coles, a sacrifice bunt and a Cajun error to even the score.

The Cajuns grabbed a 3-1 advantage in the second by using an error by UALR third baseman Austin Standiford and an RBI sacrifice fly by Bailey. But, again, the Trojans answered with a pair in their half of the third.

Louisiana-Lafayette continued the back-and-forth affair, grabbing a 4-3 lead on Mike Kabel's RBI single. Jordy Templet relieved Coles to start the fourth and held the Trojans scoreless while Scott Atwood added a two-out, RBI single to give the Cajuns a 5-3 lead.

UALR remained dormant until the sixth when Luke Mercado hit into a bases-loaded, no-out double play that plated a run. In the seventh, Miguel Miranda led off with a double off Andy Gros (2-6) and scored on Derek Santangelo's squeeze bunt.

The Cajuns had opportunities to seize the lead in each of the final four innings against UALR pitching, but base-running problems plagued the Cajuns in their attempts to move to .500 in the conference.

In the ninth, Chris Hall squibbed a two-out single just past Neil Simoneaux at second base to lift UALR to the 6-5 victory.

"The runs we gave up early in the game cost us more than the last run they got off Andy," Robichaux said. "Every time, they got a hit they got runs because they advanced on our walks. That's where it came from."

The Cajuns return to action on Tuesday at McNeese State at 7 p.m., kicking off a season-ending, four-game road trip that culminates next weekend at New Mexico State.
